It is so hard to put into words what it means to be recognized by this Canadian Country Music Industry that I have grown up in and that I have always been inspired by. So proud to be a part of that community, and my goodness, what a wild weekend, I just can’t even believe it!
It really is such a crazy thing as a newer artist having just put out a few singles from this record to, you know, have so many people believing in this music and cheering for it already. It’s seriously, it just means so much to me. You know, I attended my first Canadian Country Music Week 11 years ago, and I remember being there all wide-eyed just taking in the scene and watching the award show up in the seats and just dreaming of a day like this. So honestly it’s just a very surreal thing and a crazy full circle to be a part of this community in this way and to be celebrating all of this.
When I heard them call my name for the 4thaward, I was just like, “Umm is this really happening right now? How is this real life? I can’t even believe it!” I don’t even really remember what I said in that moment because I was just completely in shock and in awe and so, so grateful.
Afterwards it was so amazing to get to celebrate and hug so many people I love in the backstage area, and then afterwards to go find my family and give them all the biggest hug. Just kind of cry and like jump up and down together, it was such a wonderful feeling.
The last few days after this award show I just still feel like I’m floating and I really honestly am just trying to soak it all in and journal about it and hold onto this feeling. But it just doesn’t quite feel real yet, it’s pretty crazy.
All of these awards meant so much to me. I do have to say that Female Artist of the Year is a pretty wild thing. I grew up singing along to Carolyn Dawn Johnson and Terri Clark and Shania Twain and all of these female voices that had such an impact on my life as a kid. And I used to watch them on the award show, you know, with that award in their hand, and just dream of what that might feel like someday. So that was a pretty remarkable feeling I still can’t believe that happened. Songwriter of the Year was also such a crazy thing to me because that is such a big part of this adventure to me. Being able to tell stories and be in the creative trenches of this whole journey and to be recognized for that creative process really meant so much to me. And the song “Somebody’s Daughter” is just really important to me in the messaging and what it stands for in the way of looking out for each other, and to know that people have lifted that song up this year and believed in it is just very overwhelming to me.
NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Acclaimed singer, songwriter and performer Tenille Townes won four awards at the 2019 Canadian Country Music Awards: Female Artist of the Year, Single of the Year (“Somebody’s Daughter”), Anthem Entertainment Songwriter of the Year and Video of the Year (“Somebody’s Daughter”). Winning all four of her nominated categories, Townes lead the night with the most awards received.
Additionally, Townes’ 10th annual Big Hearts For Big Kids benefit concert will take place this Saturday, September 14 at the Entrec Center in Grand Prairie, Alberta. Over the past nine years since Townes started this initiative, the event has raised over $1.5 million to benefit The Sunrise House —a local youth shelter in Townes’ hometown of Grand Prairie. In addition to a headline performance from Townes, the concert will also feature a songwriters round with Adam Hambrick, Gordie Sampson and Striking Matches.

I can’t believe that we’ve been doing Big Hearts For Big Kids for 10 years. This is such an exciting thing, and to me this event represents what music is for. It’s about gathering people together and celebrating with music and being able to make a difference for something. And for me, with this being my hometown, it means everything to me. This is the group of people I grew up with, and their generosity, and their community spirit, and their ability to champion this youth shelter, and lift up these kids, and change the trajectory of their lives because of their support. And the way that the Sunrise house has been a safe place for them to turn to, it’s been the most incredible thing to witness that. I’m so excited about this year’s event.

These recognitions celebrate a breakout year for Townes, whose forthcoming full-length debut album, which was produced by Jay Joyce, is set for release via Columbia Nashville. In advance of the release, Townes has debuted four album tracks: “Jersey On The Wall,” “White Horse,” “ I Kept The Roses” and lead single “Somebody’s Daughter,” which reached No. 1 on both Mediabase and Nielsen BDS Country Airplay in Canada. Of Townes, Billboard praises, “…knack for writing story songs that make the listener stop and think,” while Music Row declares, “Tenille Townes is the future. Get on board now.”
Adding to her breakthrough year, Townes recently participated in Cracker Barrel’s “Five Decades, One Voice” campaign—a project created to highlight the importance of women in country music by celebrating legendary female artists and those following in their footsteps. For the project, Townes was personally selected by Brandi Carlile to collaborate on new versions of two songs—Townes’ “ Somebody’s Daughter ” and Carlile’s “Fulton County Jane Doe.”
In support of the new music, Townes will join Miranda Lambert on her “Roadside Bars & Pink Guitars Tour” this fall and will perform select dates with Maren Morris in November. See below for complete tour details.
