Doobie Patrick Simmons talks about Sara Evans’ performance of “What a Fool Believes” for the band’s Southbound album. (:54)
“She really brought it, you know, she sang the song like from a female point of view, and I thought that really was effective because the original is kind of about a guy who’s sort of living in a dream of getting back to…I think this is what it’s about, ‘cause who can understand what Mike sings, but…sorry, Mike (background laughter), but it’s about a guy, you know, tryin’ to get back with a gal. And really, he’s kind of a fool to believe that he’s gonna be able to make this relationship work. And when she sings it, it’s like looking at this guy saying, ‘You pathetic fool, can’t you figure out that it’s over? You know, why do you keep, you know, revisiting this relationship when you know it’s never gonna happen?’ At least that’s what I took from it, and I think she just…well, she sang it great to begin with, but that point of view really changes the song to something that, in a way, it’s more understandable.”
