Story Audio for “What Do I Know”
So “What Do I Know” I wrote this song with Michael Hardy and Jake Mitchell, two friends of mine. We got together- it’s funny actually when we got together a little while back to write this song we had never met. And so, we were just kind of getting to know each other in the room and kind of got a little acoustic groove going that felt country and southern – this kind of “Country Boy Can Survive” a little bit. We were throwing around this little phrase “What Do I Know,” you know just that colloquial thing that people say and just figuring out a way to twist that into a cool song. And, we started talking about just things that you’re taught. Specifically, for us all being from the South, little things that you’re taught about hunting and fishing, living off the land, and working hard- just those blue collar kind of middle America principles that will lead to success if you live that way. Things that your dad tells you and his granddad told him. It’s just simple man truths. And, so we just kind of wanted to blurt all those things out in this song and then we let it all culminate with “oh, but what to I know.” You know we list all these things that we know to be true based on what we were taught growing up. And, I think it’s a universal message in that these are things that I think get pushed by the wayside, but that are valuable pieces of knowledge that are handed down and you can have a good, happy, successful life should you choose to be a person that doesn’t spend money that you don’t have, you choose to be a person that wakes up early and works hard and puts in the time- Shows up, you don’t steal, you don’t cheat. You’re very honest and honorable in all of your dealings. I think that’s a message we wanted to put out in that song as things that we know and that we were taught and we just shrug it off with “oh, but what to I know.” So yeah, I thought it was kind of a cool way to do it, means a lot to me and I hope you guys enjoy it.”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Rising Arista Nashville singer/songwriter Robert Counts has debuted his new release “What Do I Know” today. Listen here.

Co-written with HARDY and Jake Mitchell, “What Do I Know” is a modern-day, Southern blue-collar anthem, that Counts describes as inspired by “things you’re taught about growing up – hunting, fishing, living off the land – things that your dad tells you and his granddad told him.”

The blazing new track follows Counts’ “soulful-and-sophisticated” (Sounds Like Nashville) self-titled debut EP, which ranges from “heartfelt” (CMT) standout “Backseat Driver,” to the sweet anticipation of “Someone In My Someday,” the take-you-as-you-are “Dress Up,” the hopefulness of “Better People,” and the smoldering soul in a cover of Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy.”

Counts grew up in Franklin, Tenn. and started playing guitar and singing at his church, where he led worship throughout his teens, but it wasn’t until after he graduated from Lee University with a degree in Biochemistry that he committed to a career in music. After winning a songwriter’s round at Puckett’s Grocery & Restaurant in Downtown Franklin, he earned a cash price and his first publishing deal. Today, the artist continues to prolifically craft new tunes, pulling fresh inspiration from his life experiences in the tradition of true country music storytelling.
