“My life was very influenced by the Muscle Shoals sound.  I grew up listening to Aretha Franklin. We would listen to Etta James.  We would listen to Otis Redding.  One of my Dad’s favorite songs that I always had to cover was Sittin on the Dock of the Bay.  And, if you’ve seen the Muscle Shoals documentary they talk about the singing river in Muscle Shoals and how it like actually sings.  And, I would go out to the train bridge and I would climb out over the bridge onto this like rock that’s connected to the outside.  And, I would just write lyrics.  And, that was how I wrote a lot of songs and I did feel a connection to the river.  And, I think it does have something to do with Muscle Shoals.  I don’t think it’s just a thing, you know, that’s whatever… that they talk about.  I think it’s really true.  I think I’m just DNA meant to do soul and, I mean, I can’t hide my accent and I can’t hide my life.  So, country’s just going to come out.  Um, so I’m like southern soul.”
