Story Audio for Rachel Wammack’s ” When I Say Amen”

Hey y’all. It’s Rachel Wammack. I’m so excited to tell y’all I have a new song! This song is so personal to me. I wrote it about 2 years ago with Matt Maher and Sam Ellis in March 2018. Little did we know 2 years later, March 2020, would literally begin some of the craziest times we’ve ever been through. Starting with, for me, the Nashville tornados. During that time, just going to share a little bit, um, Noah was down in Florida for work, and so I was alone, I was with Stevie our cat. I just remember I was holding him in the bathroom, and holding my pillow, I brought my bible in there and a flashlight. Y’all I was just like, I was so scared, I don’t ever remember being that scared and I was physically shaking, and I was texting friends making sure they were okay. And, like, I had read the same bible passage like 25 times and realized all of a sudden that I hadn’t even taken a second to pray. Like, I was doing all of these other things to distract myself that I hadn’t even given it over to the Lord. So, I really just like stared at the bathroom wall and I was holding Stevie and I just prayed.
And right about that time I heard the tornado, literally I guess it was going down the highway, and then it passed us! And, I’m so thankful that I was fortunate enough to not be hit. So many people lost their lives, lost their homes, so I’m really thankful. Then, a week later, the Corona Virus happens and it’s the topic of every conversation that I have with every single person and it just feels like it’s taken over everything. And then we’re quarantined and we can’t leave our homes then, it’s just become crazy!
So, about a week and half ago I was listening to this song, When I Say Amen, I was listening just to the demo and felt like I should put it out. And, I’m so excited to share it with y’all. You know, during this time, and since that time with the tornado, I just feel like I’ve leaned on prayer more than ever. You know, whether it be the really hard days, or it be the days I feel like I’m really grateful. I don’t know if y’all feel that way um, for things that I didn’t really notice or that I took advantage of. And, every single day I just feel like I’m leaning on prayer and it’s so much bigger than like church walls because we can’t even go to church! I just, I want this to be a gift to y’all. I hope it brings you peace. I hope it brings you comfort. I hope it makes your day a little bit better. And, I love y’all so much!

I wrote ‘When I Say Amen’ with Matt Maher and Sam Ellis on March 9th, 2018. Almost exactly two years later, Nashville was hit by a tornado. I could actually hear it ripping through homes half a mile away from me while I sat in my bathroom terrified. Then I realized I hadn’t actually taken a second to pray…

Barely a week later, COVID-19 entered the picture…slowly but surely becoming the focus of every day and every conversation. Now people are losing even more…some are losing their jobs, some are losing their stability, some are losing their minds, and some are losing their hope.

Last week I listened to ‘When I Say Amen’ for the first time in a long time, and I felt a voice inside say, ‘I think you wrote this song for…this. Right now.’ I’ve never had anything like that happen to me before.” (See full quote here) – Rachel Wammack
