MEMORY LANE CUT X CUT (AUDIO AND VIDEO):

1. Old Dominion – “Stay Drunk” (STORY VIDEO)
1. Old Dominion – “Stay Drunk” (STORY AUDIO)
Brad Tursi: “Stay Drunk is…it’s about a girl. And you know, I think it’s- the lyric seems to be two people that understand each other. You know? They complement each other, accept each other, and they’re just happy. You know, they feel good to be on the on the ride together. You know, it’s always interesting to go back and listen to the original, you know, voice memo of it after the whole cut has been done, and all the changes have been made, and enough to bring it to the guys and stuff and so yeah, that’s that’s kind of how it started out.”
Matthew Ramsey: “Yeah, I remember it was funny, like, you had sent us this like snippet of it. And we for a long time, we’re trying to bounce around chorus ideas, like you would record a chorus idea and we would all like shoot it down, then I would record one they would all shoot it down and Trevor would record one we’d all shoot it down. We never could like it was over text message for a long time trying to figure out what this song was going to be. And then ultimately, we all got in the same room finally and brought it together with Josh Osborne. To help us get out of our own way a little bit.”
Brad Tursi: “Yeah.

2. Old Dominion – “A Million Things” (STORY VIDEO)
2. Old Dominion – “A Million Things” (STORY AUDIO)
Brad: “A Million Things I wrote with Matthew and Lauren McKenna, and I remember it kind of was inspired by- I was listening at the time to Nick Lowe. And there’s a song called Homewrecker that sort of inspired the verse of it. And yeah, that’s kind of where the inspiration of at least- the music of it and the feel. I don’t really remember the title or…
Matthew: Yeah, I don’t remember how we landed on the title either. But I remember you were just kind of singing. I think you had that, that your love is a million things that-
Brad: I had that literally rapid-y fire thing.
Matthew: Yeah. And Lori McKenna is such an amazing writer. She just has this way of finding the real heart of things, even if it’s like a heartbreaking thing, but she has this really sweet approach to life and to creativity and-
Brad: She’s a great person.
Matthew: Just being in the room with her and creating a song with her. I’m so happy it made it onto this album.”
3. Old Dominion – “Memory Lane” (STORY VIDEO)
3. Old Dominion – “Memory Lane” (STORY AUDIO)
Matthew: “Memory Lane is really about, you know, a safe place to escape to, whenever you’re feeling overwhelmed or sad or happy, you know, just a place that you have, we all have, that we continue to revisit for our own sanity and comfort. You know, everybody’s got that time or location or person that they can close their eyes to and just imagine and feel everything that they felt back in that time and it can bring you some peace and I think that’s mostly what was happening to us as we were writing the song and it seems to be what happens to people when they hear it.”

4. Old Dominion – “Different About You” (STORY VIDEO)
4. Old Dominion – “Different About You” (STORY AUDIO)
Matthew: I remember Different About You- I have a friend who works with underprivileged kids. And there was one in particular that she sort of took a liking to and was helping navigate her life. And once this kid graduated school, they stayed in touch, and she was in a relationship with a boy and the guy wasn’t, like, treating her like she wanted to be treated. And she said, ‘I don’t want to be your yellow Starburst.’ And I was like, ‘Whoa, I never heard that before.’ And I immediately wrote it down. I was like, ‘I don’t know what this is. But what an amazing group of words,’ and I remember we were in this writing session. It was Brad and Trevor, myself, and-
Brad: Zach Crowell
Matthew: Zach Crowell over at Zach’s house, and we started playing through this and Trevor started singing you know, ‘I want to be your favorite ‘hello’ your hardest ‘goodbye’,’ and then that made me remember this Starburst line and to me that song is just all about that like, such a different line and a unique, just a flavor. You know? Pun intended. But then once we brought to life this kind of Red Hot Chili Peppers kind of feel, it’s so energetic and so fun. It’s gonna be really fun to like, play that live.

5. Old Dominion feat. Megan Moroney – “Can’t Break Up Now” (STORY VIDEO)
5. Old Dominion feat. Megan Moroney – “Can’t Break Up Now” (STORY AUDIO)
Matthew: Can’t Break Up Now is about, you know, two people with a lot of history and that tough point that unfortunately some people get to where maybe a change needs to happen. But it’s kind of hard to reconcile it. And imagine that this is where your life is taking you as a couple. You know? Like, “there’s no way this can be happening to us” is really the crux of that song. I think it can also be a hopeful song, too and inspiring, too. Like really dig in and yeah, and work on it and fix it and commit to a relationship that obviously has been, you know, through quite a journey.

6. Old Dominion – “I Should Have Married You” (STORY VIDEO)
6. Old Dominion – “I Should Have Married You” (STORY AUDIO)
Brad: “I Should Have Married You. I mean, I think it’s probably about a little bit of realization. You know? A guy who is talking about the, the one that got away, you know, which I think everybody maybe has one of those. Right? Our classic sad song to uptempo.”
Matthew: Sad bop!
Brad: Sad bop.

7. Old Dominion – “Both Sides Of The Bed” (STORY VIDEO)
7. Old Dominion – “Both Sides Of The Bed” (STORY AUDIO)
Matthew: Said that being lonely and Both Sides Of The Bed is really you know, stuck post. It’s the post-breakup song. It’s the reality of being in your own space and yeah, where you used to have someone and how you’re- now you’re just you. Can be a tormenting you know spot to be in where you’re just literally just staring at the ceiling evaluating you know your choices. You know? That’s a tough spot to be in to be like wow I’ve got all this room in this lonely bed.
Brad: And everything’s gonna be okay. I know it!”

8. Old Dominion – “How Good Is That” (STORY VIDEO)
8. Old Dominion – “How Good Is That” (STORY AUDIO)
Matthew: How Good Is That was your title, right?
Brad: Yeah, it was my title. I actually had like a little groove and bunch of other kind of parts to that but I think the only thing we kept was the title. We just switched around. You know, I think it’s just sort of the song- is just about realizing that you know, life is a gift, and you know, you got to enjoy every day and the good, the bad.
Trevor: It’s almost like a cousin to No Such Thing As A Broken Heart. Yeah, it’s like you said there’s always going to be negatives in life, but overall life is a net positive and you just have to appreciate you know, all the positive that’s there every day.
Matthew: Yeah, I really love the line, “Maybe it ain’t all good, but I swear it’s alright.” There’s something about that line. It’s a very simple line, but I feel that one when we sing it.

9. Old Dominion – “Some Horses” (STORY VIDEO)
9. Old Dominion – “Some Horses” (STORY AUDIO)
Matthew: For us, and for me, it’s just, it’s very relatable to our careers. And you know, we live a sort of transient life and one where we’re always chasing after something, multiple things we’re chasing after success and we’re chasing after, you know, whatever is, in our artistry that we’re, that we’re trying to find. And we’re chasing after, you know, love at the same time. And sometimes those things don’t all go together. It’s hard to have them all. So I think that’s why I identify with it. It’s just accepting who I am and the people that we’ve sort of left in our wake, for lack of a better word.

10. Old Dominion – “Easy To Miss” (STORY VIDEO)
10. Old Dominion – “Easy To Miss” (STORY AUDIO)
Trevor: Easy To Miss is just fun. You know? Sometimes, you know it’s, I guess, in some ways another sad bop. You know? But it’s a fun way of lamenting how bad you miss somebody, you know? And so, you know we have a lot of sides of us I think to this band and what we sound like but that is sort of a classic, just breezy, fun song.

11. Old Dominion – “Sleep Without Drinking” (STORY VIDEO)
11. Old Dominion – “Sleep Without Drinking” (STORY AUDIO)
Brad: “This song, Sleep Without Drinking, I think it’s just about, man, the guy, he’s at a crossroads here. You know, he’s trying to get over her. You know, he can. He wants to stop thinking better but he likes to, you know- still in love and you know, I think we’ve all been there. Yeah. You know?
Trevor: I know.
Brad: You know.
Trevor: I think caught in a catch 22 is like, that sums up that whole song right there.
Brad: Yeah and I think- I don’t know. it’s a different kind of vibe for us.
Matthew: Yeah, it took us a little bit to wrangle that one. We’ve cut it twice, actually.
Brad: We did. Yes.
Matthew: We missed it the first time but we thought you know, there’s something here. Song special and we just aren’t serving it right. So we took it back into the studio and tried again. I think we got it this time.
Brad: Yeah, I think it’s that sort of riff that is underneath it, I think is maybe something that we don’t do very often. So that’s kind of what I think what set it apart least musically.

12. Old Dominion – “Beautiful Sky” (STORY VIDEO)
12. Old Dominion – “Beautiful Sky” (STORY AUDIO)
Brad: Beautiful Sky. That’s a great- So Josh Osborne, we wrote them, the three of us wrote that with Josh, and he kind of, you know, it’s one of those things where sometimes you bring in a little half baked idea. And he played, you know, what he thought was the verse, which actually ended up being the chorus. It got to the end, and he said, you know, “The way you make everything blue. It’d make a beautiful sky.” I was like-
Matthew: We started laughing.
Brad: we started laughing. Because in my mind, I thought, like, that’s the coolest song. I’ve heard. That’s the coolest hook of all time. And then but everyone else thought that I was making fun.
Matthew: We thought he was laughing Josh out of the room.
Brad: I was just like, wow. I mean, you know, again, we read so many songs and hear so many things. And the more you write, it’s harder to find something that that makes you excited.
I was just like, wow. I mean, you know, again, we read so many songs and hear so many things. And the more you write, it’s harder to find something that that makes you excited.
Yeah. That was just a perfect example of like, that’s just been sitting there in the world the whole time. And then, you know, he picked it out. So it’s pretty easy to go, “that’s what we’re doing today.”

13. Old Dominion – “Love Drunk and Happy” (STORY VIDEO)
13. Old Dominion – “Love Drunk and Happy” (STORY AUDIO)
Matthew: “Love Drunk and Happy is a song we wrote with, it was Trevor, and myself, and Jessie Jo Dillon, and Matt Dragstrem. I think the original title that I had was High Drunk and Happy. And for whatever reason it wound up being changed for the better. Yeah, in my opinion. It’s just kind of that philosophy I think that we all aspire to. You know? We just want to live a life that’s full and happy and fun. And, you know, at the end, be able to look back and go, “I did it. I made the most out of the time that I have here.” I think we sort of captured that and in sort of a barroom sort of feel.”

14. Old Dominion – “Ain’t Got A Worry” (STORY VIDEO)
14. Old Dominion – “Ain’t Got A Worry” (STORY AUDIO)
Trevor: Ain’t Got A Worry in the world is a song that the three of us wrote with Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne on the road some years ago and we hadn’t recorded it. I think we chose not to record it for at least one album.
Matthew: We wrote it while we were writing for our third album.
Trevor: Yeah. And it was just one of those that sometimes you just dig through some songs you’ve written and we listened to it again, and just thought- I was just been sitting here, you know, and once you bring it to life in the studio, it just becomes this other thing. But that was a great day- an interesting day recording that song. You know, we recorded it down in Key West when a lot of things were happening in the world, and in our worlds that we’re not positive. It was very interesting to sit down, bring that song to life on a day like that. But it was kind of healing too. Because it’s hard in the days like that to remember that life’s gonna be okay, so that’s just a really fun song and having Blake Shelton join us on it was great. He’s such a legend, so it’s a big honor to have him on it too.

15. Old Dominion – “Easier Said With Rum” (STORY VIDEO)
15. Old Dominion – “Easier Said With Rum” (STORY AUDIO)
Matthew: Easier Said with Rum was a idea that our buddy Matt Jenkins had that is classic matching is Brad and I wrote it with Matt and Chase McGill. Over Brad’s house one day and is the classic like moment where we wrote it one way. This happened was One Man Band too, we wrote it sort of a happy way. And then right before we left, I think Chase started playing it on the piano. And it added this sort of melancholy tone to it. And it, it really showed us that we had actually written a really emotional song when I don’t think we really thought of it that way when we first wrote it. So we said, well, before we go, let’s record a version like that. And then it just became such a special thing as we were, again, we were in Key West and you know, going through a lot of stuff and we’re in that tropical location. And there was a lot in the room with us that day and, and we recorded it and it was one of the most like musical and emotional, amazing moments. And I think for us all, we all felt something in the room with us. That was beyond us. And we grew I think we grew up a good bit while we were recording that song.

16. Old Dominion – “Hot Again” (STORY VIDEO)
16. Old Dominion – “Hot Again” (STORY AUDIO)
Matthew: High Again, the idea for Hot Again came from a meeting where we were trying to figure out what we needed to do feel like we reached a point in our career where the rug felt like it got pulled out from underneath us. Because of COVID and all this other stuff. We’re just all scrambling, trying to figure out what the next move was. And promoter said we, we need to get hot again. And we all took that as a challenge. And then we were like, We got to write a song called hot again, we didn’t really know what it was going to be. Just to honor that mantra. And that’s what came out and is this sort of like, rekindle this relationship type of song, let’s, let’s dig in. And really make this something special again, because we had and so we were I think we were taking what was happening in our careers, but putting it in relationship format.

17. Old Dominion – “Freedom Like You” (STORY VIDEO)
17. Old Dominion – “Freedom Like You” (STORY AUDIO)
Brad: Freedom Like You. We wrote this with Matthew and Trevor with Jordan Davis. And you know, was that your idea?
Matthew: Yes.
Brad: Yeah. You know, it’s great song for us because I feel like it’s a little bit more rock, which I think that our band at heart all came from, you know, more rock background so it’s easy for us to kind of fall into that land and yeah, Jordan, he did you know, it was just a great day smoking some cigars on the on the porch and we kind of just took that one. Yeah.
Matthew: I think we all thought we were there to write a Jordan. Yeah. Including Jordan. Yeah. We were like, No, that was not for you. That one’s for us.
