Old Dominion are heading into next month’s ACM Awards as a double nominee. The guys are up for Vocal Group Of The Year and New Vocal Duo or Group Of The Year. The band’s success might be linked to an early lesson that was shared with Old Dominion lead singer Matthew Ramsey–“you gotta learn all the rules, so know where to break’em.” So far the guys have ruled the music charts with their number-one song “Break-up With Him,” and are now making their way into the top-10 with their latest hit, “Snapback.”
Old Dominion’s Matthew Ramsey says that the band likes to musically think outside the box. (:08)
“Somebody told me when I first moved to town and was playin’ songs around, they said, ‘You gotta learn all the rules, so you know where to break ’em.’ And I think we’re kinda pretty good at doin’ that.”
Old Dominion’s Matthew Ramsey and Trevor Rosen talk about wanting to have a really compelling sound to the band’s music. (:26)
Matthew: “We want people to go, ‘What is this?’ We do concentrate on creating that immediate reaction, you know? So, we don’t want it to just sound like a commercial. It should sound…”
Trevor: “Yeah (making musical sounds) (laughs)…”
Matthew: “It should sound like something that makes someone look at their radio when they’re driving, which is a funny thing to do ’cause people…you do look at your radio when (laughs) when you hear something.”
Trevor: “Yeah, who is this? (laughs) You look at the screen.”
Matthew: “But you definitely…we want that reaction.”
