MIDTOWN DIARIES EP

Video: Commentary on “Midtown Diaries” EP

Audio: Commentary on “Midtown Diaries” EP

Yeah, Midtown Diaries comes from, that’s where I hang out all the time. I mean, when we’re done writing songs, I go to Midtown: Winners, Losers, Red Door alot. It’s just right off Music Row. Music Row is where a lot of the writing happens where a lot of the publishing companies and record labels are. So at the end of the day, it’s a really easy walk to get down to Midtown in Nashville. And a lot of these songs have derived from there. I’ve been broken up there, met my girlfriend there. I’ve got a lot of titles from songs there. So it just made sense. When I was putting together this project, this EP to name it after Midtown, because these songs wouldn’t exist honestly, without it. I did so many different songs, so many different, you know, feels and vibes because I wanted people to be able to find their song. We have love songs. We have breakup songs. We have life songs. We have just weird songs, songs that I don’t know, I just want people to find their story. And to have their song on that record like I had growing up on different records and different songs. It’s very important to me that we’re authentic and all these songs I’ve put together, you know, I’ve lived this life so I’m hoping people enjoyed it as much as I did writing it, and that they found their song in it.

“To Us It Did”

Intro Audio: “To Us It Did”

“To Us It Did” was written about those times growing up or like you’d have a conversation in a McDonald’s parking lot or something, you’d be hanging out with your friends and to you it meant everything in the world. But if you told someone else, they just probably wouldn’t get it. So, it’s like it meant nothing to them, but to you it meant everything and that’s exactly where the song came from. I wrote it with Hardy and my boy Jordan Schmidt. And again, I had that title for a long time. And when I brought it in, both those dudes had been there, we had all lived that life. And so, it’s a very easy song to write a fun song to write. And we all kind of got the concept very early on.

“Good Thing”

Intro Audio: “Good Thing”

Cut x Cut Audio: “Good Thing”

“Good Thing” was a song that I got to ride with my buddy Thomas Archer and Kyle Fishman; two of my favorite writers in town personally. Kyle’s such a great you know, his melodies are incredible. And Thomas just, he thinks that things like no one would think of so it’s a perfect song to ride with those guys. And I don’t know, it was just a love song. We wanted to write a love song. We wanted it to be easy to sing, have a melody that you could kinda sing in your car, roll down the windows, and just give someone a love song. Tell someone you love them with a song and that was the whole idea. I think we nailed it on this one.

Outro Audio: “Good Thing”

“I Can’t Love You Anymore”

Intro Audio: “I Can’t Love You Anymore”

Cut x Cut Audio: “I Can’t Love You Anymore”

“I Can’t Love You Anymore” was a Hardy title he brought into the write, also wrote that with Jordan Schmidt as well. And you know I love those turn of phrase titles and when we said “I can’t love you any more than I do right now” I was like “I’m in, all in” because I love to write love songs. Love songs are hard to write sometimes, but when they have that kind of turn of phrase it was a lot of fun. So, we just wrote it about literally all of our girlfriends what they do on a daily basis, and we just kinda started making notes, and then we just wrote the song, it kind of just fell out that day.

Bucket List”

Intro Audio: “Bucket List”

Cut x Cut Audio: “Bucket List”

Cut x Cut Audio: “Bucket List”

“Bucket List” is one of my personal favorite songs I’ve ever written. You know, I had “Walk Like Him” on my first record, and I wanted to have another song that, you know, paid homage to my dad, but also, you know, talks about loss in a certain way so that people who have lost someone could have a song on the record that meant something to them. And I wrote it with Laura Veltz and Chris Destefano, they’re incredible writers. And it was just like a conversation that happened, we talked for an hour, just about each other, about each other’s families and then we had enough material to write this song pretty quickly. We got most of it done, we had to you know, the write had to end that day. And we came back because we thought it was a special song we needed to finish it and it was. It was one of my favorite songs, like I said, and I’m so glad that we did come back and finish it. And yeah, “Bucket List,” here we go, baby.

Truth About You

Intro Audio: “Truth About You”

Cut x Cut Video: “Truth About You”

Cut x Cut Audio: “Truth About You”

“Truth About You,” one of my all-time favorite titles. Matt Alderman, Thomas Archer, two incredible writers. And Matt came in with that title actually, I don’t remember exactly what title it was, he heard something on a movie, or a TV show that said something like that. And we kind of tweaked it a little bit and made it into you know, you quit telling lies about me, I won’t tell the truth about you. And the second I heard that written out like that, I was like “I know how to write this song, I’ve been here,” and so have both of those guys and that was one that just fell out. I think we wrote that song in less than an hour. And it’s always been one of my favorite songs. But once I heard the recording, after we sang it and went to the studio, I was like I knew this song was the one and thank you everybody who has supported it already. I’m so happy it’s my new single to country radio.

Outro Audio: “Truth About You”

“A Girl’s Love”

Intro Audio: “A Girl’s Love”

Cut x Cut Video: “A Girl’s Love”

Cut x Cut Audio: “A Girl’s Love”

“Girls Love” is another song for me, I’m a huge John Mayer fan and I love guitar riffs. So I’ve had this guitar riff forever and I got in there with Brad Tersi from Old Dominion and Jordan Schmidt. One of my you know, he’s written so many songs with me, including Drunk Me. And so he knows that I love to play guitar. So we really wanted to make this a heavy guitar riff song. And so I started off with that riff. And then he put this beat behind it that was just so groovy. And I was like, I have nothing like this on the record. This is perfect. And then Girl’s Love was actually Brad Tersi’s title, you know, and then we kind of did the turn of phrase thing. You know, imagine what can happen when you put together everything and you do everything that the girl wants. At the end of day, you’re actually learning more from her than when you think you’re actually helping her. It’s one of those stupid songs that you think you’re doing something but really, they’re doing something for you. And it had that groove that I’ve been wanting for forever. So Girls Love go check it out.

Outro Audio: “A Girl’s Love”

“Don’t Let Me Let You”

Intro Audio: “Don’t Let Me Let You”

Cut x Cut Video: “Don’t Let Me Let You”

Cut x Cut Audio: “Don’t Let Me Let You”

“Don’t Let Me Let You” I wrote it with one of my best friends Michael Whitworth and Daniel Ross. I love those guys. Michael is such a great writer and Daniel’s so creative in the way he does his demos and, and melodies. And I don’t remember how we came up with that title, I think it was just us, we had a few beers started talking and it was like, “don’t let me let you do this. Because at the end of the day, I’m probably going to do it. If you show up at the door, I’m probably going to let you in, if you call me I’m probably going to answer.” And we just kept going over all these different things that you know, was the case and scenario for, and the song just kind of fell out too. I love the song happens organically like that when it just happens out of a conversation. Sometimes you go into a room you don’t always have a title and that was the case with this.

Intro Audio: “Don’t Let Me Let You”

She Hates Me Too

Intro Audio: “She Hates Me Too”

Cut x Cut Video: “She Hates Me Too”

Cut x Cut Audio: “She Hates Me Too”

“She Hates Me Too” was a completely fabricated song in my head. Justin Wilson, Kyle Fishman wrote this song with me. And Justin kind of had that title, but I immediately took it as like you walk into a bar, you run into another dude she dated and then she’s also in the bar doing the same thing that made both of you fall for her. At the end of the day, y’all at least have the fact that she hates both you. I don’t know is one of those weird titles. I just, I kind of wanted to make up a song, something that not necessarily has happened to me. I have been at a bar one time with an exes ex. And we did have a good drink, we’re all friends now, but it was just one of those days where creatively It was just something I never heard of before and kind of wanted to take that route.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Riser House/Columbia Nashville artist Mitchell Tenpenny released his Midtown DiariesEP Friday! Mitchell produced the eight-song project along with Jordan M. Schmidt and co-wrote all the tracks including his current radio single “Truth About You.” The single became the largest streaming debut of his career garnering 2.5 million streams in its first three days of release which has now swelled to 16.5 million total on-demand streams to date. Mitchell’s total career on-demand streams has reached more than one Billion. Get the EP HERE.

“I spent all of my time during the pandemic writing songs,” said Mitchell. “I always write about my interactions with people or interactions my co-writers are having. But during the long quarantine time and being off the road, I had to channel my past and allow myself to bring out some of my vulnerabilities. I think this EP includes some of the best songs I’ve ever written.”

Mitchell talked to Billboard Magazine about fulfilling a lifelong dream with his upcoming headline show at the Ryman Auditorium and his passion for songwriting being built on inspiration from his late grandmother Donna Hilley, a former CEO of Sony/ ATV Nashville. “I love writing music more than anything in this world,” Mitchell told the magazine. He recalled, “I was at my grandmother’s office one time as a kid, and I didn’t know what she did—I just knew she was in the music industry. They (songwriters Curly Putman and Bobby Braddock) were up there having a meeting with her, and she told me, ‘Mitchell, these are the guys that wrote “He Stopped Loving Her Today.”’ It’s like everything just started firing creatively at that point. And growing up, I got to meet a lot of my writing heroes.”

The Midtown Diaries album title is named after an area in downtown Nashville just off Music Row, referred to as Midtown. It’s a place Mitchell spent many nights before his record deal playing some of the bars and clubs or in more recent years hanging out with friends after songwriting sessions on the Row. It’s through those times where he experienced the stories that became memories and framed the topics for many of these songs.

One of those hangout places was Bobby’s Idle Hour where he filmed a portion of the music video for current single “Truth About You.”Watch it HERE.Mitchell debuted the song for television audiences with a performance on KTLA’s “Music Fest Fridays.”

Lyric videos for two additional songs are available now: “I Can’t Love You Anymore”  and  “She Hates Me Too.”
