NAUGHTY LIST COMMENTARY
“Christmas is my favorite holiday of the entire year, always has been. There’s something about it, there’s a peace of mind that comes with it. It reminds me of just, you know, everything’s okay, the world is okay and just the giving season. And so a Christmas album was very important to me when I got the chance to do it. It’s been a few years in the making and now we finally have it. I couldn’t be more excited to have this project for the rest of my life, to have a Christmas project. And also my parents and family love Christmas as well. So it’s kind of cool to know that they can play their kid, their son’s Christmas record now during the holidays.”
1. NEON CHRISTMAS
“Neon Christmas” is just about what it is. It’s about you know, having Christmas at a bar. Sometimes everyone doesn’t get to travel or sometimes you get snowed in. And sometimes the best thing to do is just drink and that’s what the song is all about. Heading down to your local bar, your dive bar and having a few beers during Christmas.“
2. SNOW ANGELS
“Snow Angels” was very fun to write. I wrote it with my brother Rafe Tenpenny and Ernest K here in town. And we just wanted to write a fun little naughty song about you know, making some snow angels in some sheets. And making a fun Christmas song that wasn’t so serious and kind about staying in bed instead of getting out in the cold.“
3. HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS
“Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” is just one of those timeless songs, you know? You hear it everywhere when you’re walking through the mall or you know, you’re just out in public and you hear it on the speakers through cars. You just always hear “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and it just brings that Christmas spirit out, that joy.”
4. NAUGHTY LIST(SONG)
“Naughty List” is about making the naughty list. It’s as simple as that you know, you get to meet the parents for the first time you know, go home and you know, normally in your life, regular life you’re sleeping together in the same house or staying over. And this song’s about you know, you got to kind of hide that relationship for the first time meeting the new parents. So it’s just about getting a little naughty making that naughty list but in a nice, calm, sexy way. I wrote “Naughty List” with Jordan Schmidt and Andy Albert, two my best friends in the world. Jordan Schmidt’s producing here today with us, always produces my records, I love him. And he’s a great songwriter as well, and he’s definitely on the naughty list.“
5. LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW
“Let It Snow” for me, just reminds me of being around a Christmas tree, my grandmother’s Christmas tree. For some reason that song just always pops in my head when I think of Christmas. I think of Nashville having a white Christmas, which we normally don’t. But when we did, I guess that’s song was very special to me as a kid and it always kind of puts me back in that moment. So that’s why I recorded that one.“
6. DON’T HANG THE MISTLETOE
“Don’t Hang The Mistletoe” just a playful song about, hey, if you hang the mistletoe we’re gonna start kissing and making out we ain’t gonna make the party, we ain’t gonna leave the house. We’re just going to be in all night because you know what happens when we start kissin’. I love to do that with these Christmas songs you know, a lot of them are super serious or they’re so classic, I wanted to kind of put my touch on them.“
7. JOY TO THE WORLD
“Joy To The World” is also a church song for me. And growing up in the church, it’s just one of those songs that I’ve been singing my entire life. And that melody is just one that everybody knows. It’s easy to sing along to and it’s just kind of a standard for, you know, Christmas itself. But also being a Christian, it’s one of those songs I’ve been doing for a long, long time. And so it’s very important to me for it to make the record.
8. JINGLE BELL ROCK
o “Jingle Bell Rock,” you know, again it’s such a classic song. But I wanted to do like a “Futures” Jimmy Eat World version of “Jingle Bell Rock.” I loved that record growing up and it kind of had that guitar tone. Like it’s normally like this Hawaiian kind of vibe that’s very swung vibe, but we wanted to make it a rock song, a very like I said Jimmy Eat World, you know, bring me back to college rock and roll. And I think we achieved that, I’m so excited about this song. It’s amazing.
9. SANTA CLAUSE IS COMING TO TOWN
“Santa Clause is Coming to Town” Michael Jackson is my favorite artists of all time and Jackson Five did the best version of this and so we wanted to take that song and metal it up because I’m a metal head and make it a super metal rock song. A lot of fun, just a lot of energy. And you know a lot of syncopated stuff going on in there, which I hope you notice if you listen to it, it’s just a lot of fun. It’s just one of those songs I kind of grew up trying to sing as a kid to, to the Jackson Five.
10. O’ Holy Night
“O’ Holy Night” is special to me because the Mariah Carey version honestly. Growing up every Christmas putting that CD in, it was just one that I could always sing to that I love to sing to. And just the melody alone is just very very special and that’s why I wanted to record it.“
