For songwriters, you never know when inspiration will strike, and Miranda Lambert‘s great new single, “Dead Flowers,” is a prime example. Miranda says that the stems in question were originally a wonderful gift, but seeing them at one particular moment — admittedly a bit on their last legs — led her to write a sad song. “The inspiration for ‘Dead Flowers,’ even though it’s a really sad song, was actually a happy gesture, ’cause I had gotten flowers for Valentine’s. So it’s kind of sad that I wrote this song and the whole meaning behind the flowers I wrote it about was actually for a sweet, you know, sweet gift, but I guess that’s just the way it goes. Little things inspire…trigger somethin’ in my brain, and it goes from happy to sad, that quick. (laughs)”
