MIRANDA LAMBERT: A Merle Haggard Fan

audio

Miranda Lambert was not shy about sharing her love of Merle Haggard. She was a fan through and through–from an autographed picture of Merle that her mom gave her for Christmas one year, to her first tour bust that included lyrics of Haggard’s song on the ceiling. Miranda knew she “made” it the first time she had the opportunity to share a concert bill with the legend and “open” for him. Miranda Lambert is a huge fan of Merle Haggard.

audio  Miranda Lambert shares the story of “opening” for Merle Haggard early in her career. (:26)
“Meeting Meryl Haggard was a big deal to me. I mean that was a huge…that was something that I don’t think a lot of people have the opportunity or will get to have…to get to meet one of their heroes. So I’m lucky that I’m in the position where….I actually played a show with him, I say I opened for him, I was second in eight people but I still opened for him! I got to meet him and that was huge stepping stone for me.

audio  When she got her first tour bus years ago, Miranda Lambert described some of the special touches included on the bus. (:12)
“You walk in and you don’t feel at all like you’re on a bus, it’s like a house. It’s so cool, there are little personal details all throughout the bus, like Meryl Haggard’s lyrics on the ceiling. It’s like a cowgirl rock n’ roll bus”

audio  Miranda Lambert recalled some special gifts she got from her mom. (:27)
“My mom and I are the best to buy gifts for each other because we’re best friends so we know what each other loves. So she got me three framed pictures. Two of Jack Ingram who I am a huge fan of, I’ve had them since I was 16 and they were signed and they just really meant a lot to me, it was really encouraging saying he thought I was great. That was really cool for me, and then also one signed by Meryl Haggard. That was actually signed for my birthday but she got it framed for Christmas, so pretty cool!”
