Maren Morris on visiting The White House (Audio)

I had never been to The White House. I had never taken a tour of it as a kid. Like, this was my first time ever walking into it. And it felt like the funniest class trip because it was me and Chris Stapleton and Kristin Chenoweth and Billy Porter. It was like we’re all ushered in at the same time. So it felt like the world’s weirdest field trip. I have like classmates going to like, see The White House. But it was such an honor. And yeah, and also getting to see it for the first time in person at Christmas time with all the Christmas decorations up and every fire lit. It was so cozy and the military band was playing Christmas songs inside The White House. It was just like insane. I’m not quite convinced it happened.

The coolest thing I saw at The White House was the portrait of George Washington. Because I think it’s the only presidential portrait from the original White House that Dolley Madison saved when they lit it on fire in like 1812. And yeah, its massive it’s a huge presidential portrait and it’s the original. I mean, it was the first ever presidential portrait painted. And that was it’s just a cool story that Dolley Madison saved it from a fire.
