LORETTA LYNN: Must-Have Music

If you’ve heard the single, watched the video, or saw Loretta Lynn, Sheryl Crow, and Miranda Lambert singing “Coal Miner’s Daughter” together on the CMA Awards, that’s just one of the terrific songs on the acclaimed new album, Coal Miner’s Daughter: A Tribute to Loretta Lynn. For fans of classic country or any true music lover, the album marks a star-studded treat, with admiring artists from country music and beyond all putting their stamps on their favorite Loretta hits. And Loretta herself was thrilled with the whole album, filled with performances from Steve Earle, Faith Hill, Alan Jackson, Martina McBride, Allison Moorer, Paramore, Reba featuring The Time Jumpers, Kid Rock, Carrie Underwood, The White Stripes, Lucinda Williams, Gretchen Wilson, and Lee Ann Womack. Loretta has nothing but praise for all the artists, and here, she shares a few thoughts on Sheryl, Miranda, and Carrie — who manages to do something that legendary producer Owen Bradley used to tease Loretta for not doing. LORETTA LYNN: Must-Have Music  Loretta Lynn talks about Carrie Underwood’s recording of “You’re Lookin’ at Country.” (:27)
“She sung it so great. I mean, I’m always ahead of the beat. That’s just the way it is. They can slow me down if they think they can, but I’ve never been able to slow down, ’cause Owen Bradley said, ‘She’s always afraid that the band’s gonna beat her to the end of the line.’ (laughs) But I was always ahead of the beat. But Carrie’s right on the beat. She just…I mean, she’s great. She’s a great singer.”

LORETTA LYNN: Must-Have Music  Loretta Lynn was thrilled with Sheryl Crow and Miranda Lambert singing with her on “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” and she loved the way the whole album turned out. (:32)
“I bet Sheryl said to herself, ‘Am I gonna be able to sing this country?’ But Sheryl sings folk stuff, and I thought she done a great job. And Miranda, she, you know (mimicking) ‘my daddy worked all night in…’ you know how she’s got her little curly-Qs? She…I thought she done great. I just loved it. The whole doggone album is great. The only I didn’t like was me on it. (laughs) But, well to get the album, you’ll have to take me, too, I guess.”
