Like most successful singers who are also songwriters, Jake Owen‘s had hits with songs he’s written, as well ones he didn’t write. But when it comes to songwriting, Jake says that witnessing the life of a song — from the day it’s written, to the times when people are enjoying it the most — is one of the really cool things about creating music like his new single, “The One That Got Away.” (AUDIO INFO BELOW)

  Jake Owen says that one of the joys of songwriting is watching songs grow, and he hopes he’ll get to see that with his latest single, a song he co-wrote called “The One That Got Away.” (:47)
“I wrote it a few years ago and always thought I’d put it on a record. Now that it’s out as a single, it’s…anytime you put a single out, it’s cool to watch the growth. It’s cool to watch people not really know it at first, and then thanks to the great people at radio for playin’ your music, that’s how a lot of people get to know it. So as a song gets bigger and it climbs the chart, chart position has a lot to do with, a lot of times, what the crowd reaction is, ’cause if the radio station’s playin’ it a lot, their people know it and are expectin’ you to play it, and it’s the new one from you, so it’s kind of like the newest thing. And it’s been neat to watch songs grow and take on a life of their own, because a lot of these songs that I’ve written, I write ’em in a little room with a buddy of mine or somethin’, just hopin’ that one day people will sing along to it. So when you actually get to see the whole process from beginning to the end, that’s the benefit of writin’ songs.”
