Flashback to August 2003, when “It’s Five O’clock Somewhere” started it’s stay at the number-one spot on the songs charts for 8 weeks.
On August 12th 2003 Alan Jackson released his Greatest Hits Volume 2, but it was a new song added to that collection that would become one of the biggest hits of his career. “It’s Five O’clock Somewhere”–released in June of that year, would shoot up the charts, and two short months later capture the number-one spot in early August. Alan Jackson asking “what would Jimmy Buffett do” stuck a chord with fans, and the song would retain the top spot for 7 weeks in a row, becoming an undeniable anthem for having a good time. In late September Alan would slip to the number-two spot with Dierks Bentley hitting number-one for the very first time with “What Was I Thinkin'”– but fans were still thinking “what Jimmy Buffett would do,” so the following week, “It’s Five O’clock Somewhere” returned to the number-one spot in the beginning of October for an 8th and final week. The song would go on to win the CMA Award for Vocal Event of the Year.
Alan Jackson will be inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame in October, but between now and then, he’s still on the road singing “It’s Five O’clock Somewhere”– crisscrossing the country on his Honky Tonk Highway tour with Lee Ann Womack. “That was a fun song. I didn’t write that…a couple of guys wrote this here at Nashville…but as soon as I heard it, I knew I was going to have to call (Jimmy) Buffett and see if he’d come sing on that thing. He, of course, agreed. It’s just being a standard now for me to do that song, and the fans are already expect it. They got their little signs written up ‘It’s Five O’clock Somewhere.’ You know, it’s something you’ve heard your whole life, and never heard a song made out of it…so it really was timely and I think everybody identifies with that, that likes to have a cocktail in the evening.”
