CAM: Writing Instructions

audio

Cam is one of those artists that loves interacting with her fans on social media. In fact, she holds a question and answer session each week with her fans on Facebook that Cam has dubbed Mayday Mondays. Cam loves having the opportunity to get in touch with her fans in such a personal way. She answers any questions they have, she gives advice to the fans that ask for it, and Cam just generally keeps everyone up to speed on what’s going on with her music, tour and life. Cam loves trying to help aspiring singer/songwriters during the Mayday Monday sessions–like this week she answered a fans question about songwriting. Cam shared what worked for her, and some of the secrets of songwriting–including the step of “refining.” Cam said “refine until you get to point where you love it.” To see what else Cam says on her Mayday Mondays question and answer sessions, check out her Facebook page, or just to see the videos, click right HERE

audio  Cam shares advice on how to write songs. (1:08)
“We like to start with an idea, or concept, or like one line, something that inspires you enough that you finish the song even though it will take probably a very long time you’ll be very uncomfortable you won’t have the answers all the time, something that motivates you, that you’ll love it enough to finish it. First thing, so find some inspiration, and when you find something you love, then you start a brainstorm about all the ideas that are related to it, just kind a couple rhymes maybe with things that you like if you have a catchphrase, if you have a little snippet that you like, that’s kind of like the good punchline. Then that’s like your fertilizer for the rest of your song (laugh) that maybe isn’t the most amazing thing you’ve ever written but you just wrote it all down in a big stream consciousness and then you refine, and refine, refine, refine until you get to point where you love it and that that’s one way writing. There’s also just kind of the wright where you do it every day, and so you just write a new song everyday and you kind of start to get…like hone your chops that way, so when inspiration does come you’re ready for it.”
