BRAD PAISLEY: Romancing the Song  With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, Brad Paisley talks about his romantic hit, “Then,” and manages to playfully needle his co-writers at the same time. (1:32)
“I really realized how romantic this song is through the eyes of the people that buy the records and come out to shows. I mean, I say somethin’ almost every night at the end of song into the mic, which is, ‘I hope you’re in love tonight, and if you’re not, I hope you fall in love tonight.’ Because it’s really one of those things that you see so many people experiencing that, and it’s the hope of everyone who is in a relationship that it gets better with time, and not worse. When they get better, like they’re supposed to, you have the building blocks of what it will take to go through a lifetime with somebody. When they don’t get better, you’re headed for a ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ talk, where it’s like, ‘Hi, thanks for coming. You know….’ It starts that way. No one goes into a relationship that’s romantic hoping that it ends badly. Everybody wants it to end either really, really well, or not. And anyway, that song, for me…I’ve never said — I say ‘I’ve,’ but I had two other writers, although I don’t remember what their contribution was, but it was…I’ve never said it, anything more romantic I think than this song, and those guys were…they agreed when I came up with the lines.”
