Holding Out for the One, to me, is all about not being afraid to be who you are. Being proud of who you are and what you stand for and that it’s ok to be a little different in whatever that might be. To me, there’s a freedom in sort of owning that, where it makes you feel like you could stand on top of the world and shout it to the roof tops of whatever that might be. That’s sort of the feeling we were channeling in the writing room with my friends, Daniel Tashian and Mark Beeson, thinking about putting this song together. I love singing this song and feeling that feeling.
White Horse, to me, was this opportunity to sit down and challenge the idea of fairy tales that I think we as a culture get so wrapped up in the magic of. And, I think in real life, I’m learning, love is just so much bigger than that. It’s got so much more to offer and I hope when people hear this song they feel reminded of that and know that whatever their love story is that it’s beautiful. You know when we wrote this song, Jeremy Spillman and Daniel Tashian and I were sitting around this room and Daniel has three adorable little girls. And, they all are kind of in that spot of reading fairy tails and watching those movies and building this idea in their mind of what love looks like and we wrote this for them.
Jersey on the Wall is inspired by a community that I met in Grand Manan, New Brunswick. I had been playing for schools, traveling across Canada before moving to Nashville and my adventures brought me to this tiny little town. It’s like 2500 people off this island, which is like planes, trains, automobiles and a ferry to get to. I show up at this island and I was completely enamored by the community spirit that this group of people had. Showed up in the gym, played for the school, played a little community show that night where all the parents and teachers came out. And then, Ms. Ward, the teacher brought me back to the inn that they had me staying at and explained that part of the reason they brought me all the way out there was to be part of this grieving process. There’d recently been this car accident with five kids from that high school, four of which I had been hanging out with all day and had no idea what they had just been through. And one of which, her name was Danielle- she was the star basketball player. She just graduated with a full ride scholarship and she was taken in this fluke wreck. I sat there and like wept with Ms. Ward and was even more enamored with by this town after hearing everything that they had ben through. And, kept in touch with them. I got to fly back the following spring. Ms. Ward and I worked out so I could surprise the kids for the high school graduation. And, I’ll never forget sitting at the back of that gym with the whole town piled in there- it was like 20 kids graduating- best kind of graduation ever. And, Danielle’s parents get up there on that stage and give their daughter’s honorarium scholarship to Zoe who was her best friend and also in the car that night. And, there’s not a dry eye in this place. And, I’ll never forget kind of glancing over to the wall and you know looking up at that Jersey and seeing that number and just thinking ‘Man, do I have questions for God.’ I really think it’s ok to have those. I think there’s healing in the conversation itself, but I just remember thinking this is the most amazing group of people and… I think tragedy anywhere is something horrible, but tragedy in a small town is really something else. And, I feel like I carry this spirit of that gym every time I sing this song. But yeah, I came back to Nashville after that trip and shortly afterwards one of my best friends from lost her little brother and it got me asking a bunch more questions. And, I got sit in the writing room with Tina Parole and Gordie Sampson and tell them these stories and I’m so thankful for the way the song found us in the room that day. I think it was a bit of a wrestle and I think when the song was we all looked at one another and went ‘this is pretty cool.’ I’m very thankful for that day and this song and a way to hopefully bring a little bit of, maybe some healing in the way people having those same questions because I really think we all have them.
I Kept the Roses, to me, is a song about holding onto the good parts in anything you go through. It’s like we get to kind of keep those in our memory bank and looking back on whatever situation that you went through and being able to smile at some parts of it is an important thing- in growing, in living and, to me, that’s what this song represents.
Somebody’s Daughter was inspired by a drive I took with my mom. We were going furniture shopping and took this exit off the interstate and saw this girl holding on to a cardboard sign and she looked so young, so worried. And, we had this conversation in the car about, you know, what her story might have looked like. And, I couldn’t shake her face from my mind and brought this idea into a writing room and really just am grateful for the opportunity to have grown up in a house where we had conversations about what was going on in the world around us and the people’s lives around us and that my parents taught me to remember the fact that everyone has a story, you know. I think sometimes music and recognizing those moments can make us feel more alike and more all together than we might realize.
I remember the first time that I heard Stupid Boy on Keith Urban’s record and was just so blown away the way the song made me feel. I’ve always loved singing this song and it was such a joy to be able to record a version of it and I think every time I play this song on stage or sing it through, it sort of reminds that we can’t let anyone else take our light, you know. It’s sort of a bit of a fighting song. You just sort of channel what you need to and I’m really honored to have gotten to do a version of this song.

| Acclaimed singer, songwriter and performer Tenille Townes’ new EP, Road to the Lemonade Stand, is out today via Columbia Nashville (stream/purchase here). Of the release, Townes shares, “It makes my heart so happy that this EP is out in the world with this collection of songs and that we are headed towards the full album coming in the spring! I’ve been hearing people on the road ask about coming back for my own shows and I couldn’t be more grateful and excited for my very first acoustic headlining dates on the ‘Road to the Lemonade Stand Tour.’ I can’t wait to have hang time with everyone at these shows and keep walking down this road together.” Townes will kick off the “Road to the Lemonade Stand Acoustic Tour” this spring with stops at Chicago’s Carol’s Pub, Boston’s City Winery, New York’s Rockwood Music Hall and Washington DC’s City Winery among others. The headline run adds to an impressive 2020 tour itinerary, which includes All For The Hall at Bridgestone Arena on February 10, Stagecoach Festival on April 25, Ryman Auditorium with Hot Country Knights on April 29 and a series of spring/summer dates supporting Alan Jackson. With the release of the EP, Townes is inviting fans to join her on the journey to her highly anticipated debut album, The Lemonade Stand, which will be released later this spring.
