Making Good Time is about the glory days of a relationship really just kinda that nostalgic look back at a time when you were young and you know summers last forever and you just kinda are having the time of your life with the person you love. Whether or not it worked out or not is the question mark, but that doesn’t really matter because back in those days everything was perfect.
Water My Flowers is a love song in a minor key, but it’s really just about that desperation to find somebody that you can grow old with and somebody that’s going to be there long after the good times and long after you’re gone.
Me Most Nights is a song about you’re wondering, you’re going through some troubles with your significant other and you just miss them and wonder what they’re doing and that’s never a great place to be in so I think everyone can relate to that emotion.
Man or the Song is sort of an introspective look of what it’s like to be in this business, and we’ve been in it long enough that we’ve experienced all sorts of highs and lows and all of the good things that come with this business and some of the negative that come with it too. One of those being questioning who your true friends are and who are the people that are around you all of the time and it can get a little bit cloudy sometimes so it’s kinda a look at that side of this business.
Break Your Mama’s Heart is about growing up. Ya know, getting older and you know life, you start at once place and end up at another ya know, and there’s a lot of bumps along the way and your mom is always there trying to protect ya, from the minute you were born to when you’re still in your forties, fifties, sixties. You’re gonna grow away from her, it’s just sorta natural in life, and it’s tough to be a mom, I’m sure.
Miss You Man is a tribute to our late friend Andrew Dorff and it’s probably the song that we connect with the most emotionally on the record. I think everybody can connect with the song whether you just lost somebody or whether you just lost touch with somebody. Ya know it’s just real simple, you remember the good times, and there’s certain memories that make you think of that person and you just miss em.
Talk Country is a good ole classic sorta southern picture of a country girl and what they do to us gentleman. It’s just a fun country song that we wrote one day and it really kinda came to life in rehearsals as we were working on this, and it was a fun song to record, lots of big guitars and good country song imagery.
Late Great Heartbreak is in the style of some of our influences. A lot of us grew up listening to Huey Lewis and the News so stylistically it sounds a little bit like that, but it’s kinda a new take of a breakup song and getting over that relationship and moving on with your life. It’s just a fun dance number, it’s the closest thing that we have to a good true dance song.
Crying in a Beach Bar is just a fun song, it’s a sad title, but it’s just a song about trying to get over somebody and it’s tough to be sad when you’re sitting in such a beautiful setting like a beach bar with the sun going down.
One of Us is about the imbalance that inevitably happens in a break up. Hearts don’t break even, they don’t, so you know one person is typically moving on a little faster than the other and this is a good description of that moment and that experience. When you’re the person who is wondering how your partner or ex partner has moved on so quickly.
What Doesn’t Kill A Memory is a twist on the saying what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, but in this case you’re trying everything to get over a girl and you’re trying drinking and you try these other things, but ultimately those things only make you think of her more.
Sip in the Right Direction can’t get drunk unless you start drinking early ya know and sometimes it’s the only cure for what’s ailing you ya know. Taking one sip at a time until you’re having a good time and forgetting about whatever is bad in your life and that’s what this song is about.
Good Night Music City is a love letter to Nashville. It’s just given us so much and our entire experience here, all of the ups and downs, all of the good things that we’ve gotten all of the frustrations that we have, as anyone, in this business that goes through that process of “trying to make it” experiences it’s all of that rolled into one song. We just love it so much and we love our experience here in Nashville and everything that has come from it. So it’s a tribute to the city that has sorta raised us as a band.
