Mitchell Tenpenny – “The 3rd” (Story Audio)
My song “The 3rd” It’s a very important song to me. It’s also the title track of the record, but my name is James Mitchell Tenpenny The 3rd. I’m proud of where I come from, a proud of my name, and I want to say I want to write a song that shared about where I come from. From my Granddaddy, to my Daddy, to them naming me, to me wanting to make them proud and carry on a great legacy with this name. It’s all in it. It’s all in “The 3rd” and I hope you enjoy.
Mitchell Tenpenny – “Good Thing Goin'” (Story Audio)
My song “Good Thing Going” is look, I’m all about songwriting and hooks and turn of phrases and when I first heard this title, I knew I had to write a song about it. Some of my good buddies actually sent me this idea and I thought it was brilliant. You know how you can mess up anything when you have a good thing going, and it’s about somebody messing that up, and that’s true life. That’s real life. That’s part of growing up, but I love how the hook turns a “Good Thing Going”. You’d think it would be a good thing. It’s not. Check it out.
Mitchell Tenpenny – “Bigger Mistakes” (Story Audio)
My song “Bigger Mistakes” was actually, a fun song that I kind of pulled from my mom listening to songs in the car back in the day. She always loved that song. You know, “You’re so vain. You probably think this song is about you”, and I always thought that was a funny concept, and I wanted to kind of give my version of that song where, like, after a breakup, they say that, you know, the classic, “you’re going to think of me, you’re going to miss me”. All this stuff and it’s like, no, man, I made bigger mistakes than you. I made bigger mistakes today, yesterday, I’m moving on, and I just love the angst it kind of has. So, yeah, it’s kind of a, you know, my version of one of those songs.
Mitchell Tenpenny – “Woke Up in a Dream” (Story Audio)
“Woke Up in a Dream” is one of my favorite songs on the record because it reminds me of what I grew up listening to. A lot of pop influences. I love a great melody, I love a hooky melody, and I wanted a song that kind of was talking about when you’re first falling for somebody or you kind of feeling that vibe, and it’s like everything feels like a dream. “Is this real? Is this really happening?” You have a great night. You wake up tomorrow and be like, “is this going to happen again?” and I don’t know that that moment, that feeling you get when that fire starting to happen. It’s always a great concept to me and “Woke up in and Dream” is, a perfect version of what I’ve dealt with before and I hope you enjoy it.
Mitchell Tenpenny – “Iris” (Story Audio)
“Iris” is one of my favorite songs of all times. It’s one of the very first songs I ever learned to play on guitar. I remember watching the Goo Goo Dolls on MTV and watching them live play, and just how big that song was, and obviously what that song has become. I’ve been playing that song at the end of my set for a couple of years now, and we were in the studio and just thinking about, shall we record something else? We had a little extra time, and it was a no brainer to record one of my favorite songs, “Iris”, and I’m so glad we did it. I love hearing it. It makes me feel so nostalgic when I hear that song and I hope you all enjoy my version of it. Here’s “Iris”.
Mitchell Tenpenny – “I Won’t” (Story Audio)
“I Won’t” is one of my favorite songs on the record, personally, because I got to write it with my younger brother. I love writing songs with my younger brother, and it’s been fun because he plays bass with me on the road, but “I Won’t” is something that we got to do together that other people get to hear. It’s a kind of a, it kind of tells a story about how we grew up to the kind of music we grew up singing, harmonies to in the car. It’s got a great beat. It’s my kind of John Mayer country version of what I do, but what me and my brother do best. I hope you enjoy it.
Mitchell Tenpenny – “Guess We’ll Never Know” featuring Colbie Caillat (Story Audio)
“Guess We’ll Never Know” was a song I wrote with an incredible artist named Teddy Swims, who I’m sure y’all have heard of and I love singing with that guy. When it came time for my record and I kept listening to the demo, I kept hearing a different voice on this and it’s Colbie Caillat, the one and only. I used to sing songs, you know, in my truck and trying to harmonize with her, listening to her music that influenced me. So this was such a full circle moment to get her on this song. I’m so proud of it, the way it turned out, and so humble that she took her time to make it so special. I hope you all enjoy it.
Mitchell Tenpenny – “Not Today” (Story Audio)
“Not Today” is an awesome, anthemic rock song on my country record. I love this song so much. It’s my single right now for a reason because I think everybody in this world has been through what this song talks about, and sometimes it’s okay to own the pain, to wear the pain, know that you’re going to get through something, but acknowledge that it exists. I think that’s part of the healing process and it’s written all through this song. I hope you enjoy “Not Today”
Mitchell Tenpenny – “Smoke” (Story Audio)
“Smoke” is a song about like when you’re just starting up a relationship, and I love the way that the hook turns on itself too. It’s like, right when you see some smoke, you get that fire going, but sometimes you can go too fast and burn that fire out and bring it right back down to smoke.
Mitchell Tenpenny – “Set It in Stone” (Story Audio)
My song, “Set It in Stone” is one of my favorites on the record because it means the most to me. It talks about how you want your legacy to be left. How do you want people to remember you when you’re gone and I think it’s important. Unfortunately, in my life, I’ve had a lot of people that went too early in my opinion, or I’ve seen a lot of things that have happened in my life that made me really want to write a song like this. I hope that you can relate to it, because we all want to leave with something good. We all want to believe with people thinking good about us. And when you set it in stone, we all want to know what’s written on that headstone.
Mitchell Tenpenny – “Make it Rain” (Story Audio)
“Make It Rain” is a fun song that I just wrote out of absolutely nowhere. I love like, the Ocean’s 11 movies. I love like, bank robbery movies. I remember the Batman when the Joker scene comes in, and so I wanted to, I wanted to write a song about a bank robbery for some reason. I don’t know why, but this one I wanted to make about why someone had to rob a bank. The good guys. Why would the good guys have to rob a bank. This one’s about farmers and rain and not getting enough rain and not being able to feed their family and having to do whatever they have to do to get the money to keep the farm.
Mitchell Tenpenny – “Started Stoppin'” (Story Audio)
“Started Stoppin’” is such a groovy song. It is one of those songs that latches onto you immediately with the drum groove in the bass and I also just love the hook. We were writing down in Florida one day and we were just kind of coming up with ideas and something in my head was, “I just started stopping loving you”. I don’t know, there was something about that concept that just I couldn’t quit singing it all day. So I had to write that song and it is, it is a, you know, a thing that happens just like I just started stopping loving you, don’t keep coming back in my head. Don’t keep, you know, coming around the corner out of nowhere when you’re trying to forget about somebody. It’s a cool song that has a good influence on it and I want you all to check it out right now and I hope you dig it.
Mitchell Tenpenny – “Well Whiskey” (Story Audio)
“Well Whiskey” is a good old classic turn of phrase and country music, one of my favorite ways to write a song. As a songwriter, I always love on a good turn of phrase, come to the table, and obviously, well whiskey. It’s like, I love the concept of talking to the whiskey itself, talking about, you know, low shelf to top shelf, comparing yourself with the whiskey. I think we do that a lot. Sometimes we’re on the low shelf, sometimes we’re on the top shelf and, you know well whiskey, it doesn’t always turn out right. So I love the conversation being have with somebody that’s going to make you conversate with somebody else.
Mitchell Tenpenny – “Same Moon” (Story Audio)
“Same Moon” is my version of a Brooks and Dunn classic. I grew up loving Brooks and Dunn and I loved “Neon Moon” and I love just the way that they, you know, kind of set back in the groove on their songs. So I wanted to write a song that kind of had that influence that they gave me as a young kid so “Same Moon” is a cool concept, too, because it’s, you know, being married to a, a female artist who’s traveling the country as well. We don’t get to see each other all the time and I thought it was a cool concept to think about. “Hey, no matter where we are, how far we are, we can look up at the same moon and feel close”.
Mitchell Tenpenny – “Breaking My Heart“ (Story Audio)
“Breaking My Heart”. You know, the classic “I just broke up with somebody and I’m trying to get them off my mind”, but everything around you reminds you of them. Whether it’s the car they drove, the bars you went to. Maybe it’s a song on the radio, the type of food you eat, whatever it is, it’s like you’re having a great day, and then all of a sudden it just goes downhill because one little thing reminded you of them and take a break from breaking my heart.
Mitchell Tenpenny – “Long Way to Go” (Story Audio)
“Long Way to Go” is something I’ve learned during marriage for sure. It’s you’re always learning about that person you love, the person that you thought you knew everything about. It’s just not true. You’re going to learn and people are going to change, and you’re going to dive deeper into a relationship. I think that’s how it works in every relationship from the beginning to the end. You’re always going to learn stuff about each other and I just love the fun way of expressing, man, “I think I know it all. I think I got a good grasp on it, but I still got a long way to go”.
Mitchell Tenpenny – “Head Start on a Heartbreak“ (Story Audio)
“Head Start on a Heartbreak” is exactly what it sounds like. This song is about someone that already knew they wanted to break up with you, and you didn’t even see it coming. They definitely had a head start on a heartbreak. I’ve had that happen to me a few times, as I’m sure some people have. You don’t really stand a chance when that happens.
Mitchell Tenpenny – “Fall Back In It“ (Story Audio)
“Fall Back In It” is my Michael Jackson, per se, song on the record. I loved those records. I loved that pop polish sound. Like, I love that the melody song kind of started as a melody before the hook came to mind. Then I just started talking about it and thinking about, you know, those, those flash, those quick relationships, the ones that were like so hot they burnt out so quick. It’s like, “I don’t even know what we really were. Were we anything? Were we something for one night or for a week? A month? Who knows, but whatever it was, then I want it again”. It’s just one of those fun songs that kind of talks about that scenario.
Mitchell Tenpenny – “Demon or Ghost“ (Story Audio)
“Demon or Ghost” is my version of what I was at 15 through 18 years old. Emo, farm Emo to the Max. Underoath is one of my favorite bands of all time. They got me started. I was a drummer back in the day because of Aaron Gillespie, and I always wanted to scream on songs because of Spencer, and it’s just so cool to get to be a part of a record with them, to write a record with them, and to kind of go back into the days when I was falling in love with music, learning to play guitar and to be in bands. Underoath is my favorite so much, like I am so grateful for what they’ve given me the opportunity to be on this. Thank you guys for everything. I hope you all enjoy our version of the song together.
Mitchell Tenpenny – “Tennessee in Me” (Story Audio)
“Tennessee in Me” is about where I’m from. I’m born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee. I’m very proud of where I come from and this song just kind of tells you about everything I grew up with, the love of it, and why I love Tennessee so much. It’s such a beautiful place. Welcome, anyone to come here. Come check it out.
