“Boyfriend Season” – Story Audio

So when it comes right down to it “Boyfriend Season” is about you know a relationship going wrong and then kind of what happens afterwards you know. And I’ve seen my fair share of relationships going wrong and you know I know sometimes you carry some guilt, you wish you could have done more to keep things going or you know kind of would have could have should have, But in this case and “Boyfriend Season” you know the singer, who’s you know a lot like me, kind of feels like he left it out, you know all out there on the field, so to speak. And that one of these days you know, the girl that broke up with him in the song is maybe gonna realize that. And, you know, just kind of whatever helps you sleep at night part is sort of a tongue in cheek kind of well wish but then also kind of a dig a little bit. So I think that’s what makes us all kind of interesting.

Matt Stell on Writing “Boyfriend Season” (Audio)

The process for writing “Boyfriend Season” was pretty similar to how we write a lot of songs in Nashville at least how I do. You know we kind of come into the room with an idea. In this case the idea was like whatever helps you sleep at night and it was you know basically you know all the things we do to kind of distract ourselves from the truth sometimes. And that’s that was where the song was born and we kicked it around a while and came up with something that we thought was interesting. But then you know the top of the chorus has this ‘line tell you friends it ain’t boyfriend season,’ and for some reason “Boyfriend Season” just kind of hit harder as a title then then “Sleep At Night,” which I guess technically would be the quote unquote turn of phrase, which is typically your title, but we stuck with “Boyfriend Season” just because it sounded cool and it’s fun to sing. It’s fun to yell.

“Boyfriend Season” – Outro Audio

RECORDS Nashville/Arista Nashville Platinum-selling artist Matt Stell dropped a brand-new track called “Boyfriend Season ”, as his current single “That Ain’t Me No More” continues to climb the country radio charts. The fresh new track, co-written by Matt with Zach Abend, Seth Ennis and Geoff Warburton, and co-produced by Matt with Ash Bowers, is his first new music in seven months and gives fans a taste of new music to come in 2022.

“When it comes to break-ups I think everybody spends a lot of time in their own head, especially deep down when you know that breaking up might be a mistake, it might be your fault, or at least you could’ve done more to give the relationship a fair chance of succeeding,” says Stell of the new song.

He adds, “That’s a kinda hard thing to face, so I think sometimes we try to talk ourselves into feeling better about the situation. ‘That Ain’t Me No More’ and ‘Everywhere But On’ is this happening from the guy’s perspective. ‘Boyfriend Season’ is the flip side of the coin where the girl in the song is having to deal with those feelings of not having 100% closure on stuff. And also, ‘tell your friends it ain’t boyfriend season’ is also really fun to yell at a concert!”

With more than 470 Million cumulative streams across his catalog to date, Matt ‘s current single “That Ain’t Me No More,” follows his back-to-back No. 1s, Platinum-certified track “Prayed For You ” and Gold-certified “Everywhere But On.”  As one of only eight debut country artists in the last six years to have their first two singles top the charts, Matt celebrated this success as one ofCountry Radio Seminar’s 2021 New Faces of Country Music class.
