RYAN HURD & MAREN MORRIS: ON HOW SON HAYES HAS IMPACTED MUSIC (AUDIO)
With baby Hayes set to turn 1 year old this month, Maren Morris and Ryan Hurd discuss how the responsibilities of parenthood have impacted their music.
RYAN HURD: I think it makes you a lot more serious about this. It’s not just a game anymore, this is like, you know, it’s a living that’s really important now because it’s not just you, it’s another person dependent on it. People talk about that a lot, in our industry they talk a lot about baby luck. You know, like right when Hayes was born I had just had another #1 song as a writer, and Maren had come off “The Bones,” so it was perfect timing for that. But I think it just makes you a little more focused is what I’ve found. I haven’t found, maybe Maren has a different experience than me, but I haven’t found that it’s changed my inspiration as much as it’s sort of focused my energy. MAREN MORRIS: Yeah, we had Hayes right at the beginning of the pandemic, and we had no context, it was our first time being parents. I feel like it’s changed me in so many ways, I feel like I write songs differently now because of him. I don’t know, and it just gives you this other layer of life that so many people go through as parents, but as a writer it kind of feels like you enter into this club. You’re like “oh wow, there’s other people that did this, and also multiple times?” Like that still blows my mind. But no, we are really, really blessed, and he’s such a happy little boy, and yeah we’re really lucky to have him.
