Hey! This is Ryan Hurd, and that was “Half Hoping,” one of my songs from my new EP, Platonic.
“Half Hoping” is actually the only song I’ve ever recorded that I didn’t write. I just felt like it was something that sounded like me, and because I love songwriters and feel a responsibility to that, just felt like cutting a hit. It’s a hit song, I love the track, I love what it says. It’s just a really cool thing for me to be able to have something like that for our live show, and people already know it, so it’s fun to be able to put out the studio version and have people anticipate it. It’s just been a really cool experience to have that song.

I wrote this song with some buddies on my bus. “Platonic,” I had the title for a long time and I didn’t know how to write it, but just the chant-y part of it really started to make sense. There’s nothing really to this song, I call this the candy or the sugar on the album. It’s like the frosting, like there’s some meat to the EP but this is the one that’s just fun and that’s all. I think you need those songs that make people excited and everybody wants to listen to stuff like that. And so that’s why I think “Platonic” was such an important thing, and why I wanted to name this collection of songs after it.

“Florida With a Girl,” I feel like it’s kind of like “Michigan for the Winter.” I love story songs, and I love where the entire story is in the title of the song. And “Florida With a Girl” is just about that first time you’re on Spring Break, whether that’s high school or college and you taste some of that freedom that you’ve never had before. Sonically, I feel like it’s just a continuation of what we’ve done with “To a T” and with “Platonic.” It’s my manager’s favorite song, so it was really fun to record and put this on this EP.

“Wish for the World” is probably my favorite song I’ve written in the last few years, probably since “I’ll Be the Moon.” We’ve been playing it in our live shows, and it’s one of those songs that fans of mine have been anticipating. It’s really cool when that happens, it’s like people are really excited about what’s about to come out because they’ve heard it live. It’s just like my prayer for the people that come to our shows, that they would take away something more than just a good time. That they would maybe hear a song like this and go, “Man that really hits me where I needed it.” And to me, this is like my best version of country music.
