Tomorrow, Friday June 3rd, is the day that Maren Morris‘ debut album Hero arrives in stores and online! Maren is super excited to have the album out and let fans have a chance to check out the collection of songs that she says are influenced by not only country music, but classic rock, R&B, and soul. The album’s title is from a line in the song “I Wish I Was” (track 9 on the album), where Maren sings “I’m not the hero in the story,” but she feels that since the events that inspired that song, she has admits that she’s kind of become her the hero of her story…a story that led her to making this album. Hero has 11 tracks that were all co-written by Maren, and to make sure the album had the feel that she was aiming for, she also co-produced Hero as well.   Maren Morris shares where the title of her album Hero came from and why she feels it’s so appropriate. (1:38)
“Hero came from the song ‘I Wish I Was,’ which is on my EP, but it’s on the full record. That was one of the first songs I wrote that really put this whole album into motion. I was going through a break up at the time, I was actually the person breaking up with someone, and it was a really emotional year with that happening but with that song it’s basically an apology to this person for being kind of the villain in that moment, and it says in the chorus ‘I’m not the hero in the story.’ I think about my life since that song was written, and since that experience was had, and how far I’ve come since that day. And I went from this bad guy to basically being honest with myself and all the people around me and growing up and I feel like that song also started this whole recording process and making this album and I felt like it was appropriate to name it Hero, because the tide turned so much for me since that day. I’ve sort of become my own hero over the last two years and having the guts to make a record, having the guts to go from a songwriter to be an artist. I mean it’s a very scary thing to do. You’re very vulnerable and you’re putting yourself out there for the world to assess, and judge, and critique. So, I feel like Hero just that word coming back to me, and it just felt right to be in this piece of work after that.”

“One of my favorite things to do is just be in the studio. I think the last few years, just being a songwriter and being in studios to do demos I have learned a lot from the best players in town just, you know, the sounds that I love over the last few years, and also just being a music lover myself I definitely was inspired by a lot of like classic rock, and country, and R&B sounds. We tried to find a happy medium to weave all of these different influences.”

“If I’m handing my music to someone is never heard me before, I would just say…I’ve put every part of me into this album. I’ve written every song, I co-produced it, it really is everything about me. Genre wise you really can’t lock anything down on this album, it’s cohesive but it’s also all over the place, and it’s just a diverse piece of art, and I feel like there really is something for everyone on it. So, if you love country, if you love pop, if you love soul, you will enjoy this record I hope.”

  Maren Morris jokes that her family in Texas might be too supportive, and there might not be enough copies of Hero in Texas to meet the demand. (:18)
“I think after my family, and friends, and extended family I hope there is some more of my records left in Texas…because all the tickets that have been reserved for my family for the Keith Urban show in Dallas, I am just shuttering to think if they leave any records for anyone else. They’re definitely supportive.”

“I am definitely gonna go to some kind of store that the day comes out and go buy it. Cause, as a songwriter I do that every time I get a song on someone’s record and the fact that I’m in a get to go and buy my own..it’s going to be very surreal.”
