OLD DOMINION: Songwriters, Hitmakers

audio

Old Dominion continues to make a name for itself as a band with their debut hit, “Break up with Him.” These guys are also great songwriters with band members behind a growing list of number-one hits that now includes Kenny Chesney’s “Save It for a Rainy Day.” Old Dominion’s Matthew Ramsey and Brad Tursi teamed with Andrew Dorff to write the song — which Matthew says got the benefit of some personal input from Kenny himself. audio  As one of the writers of “Save It for a Rainy Day,” Old Dominion’s Matthew Ramsey says that Kenny Chesney reached out to him before he recorded the song. (:34)
“I get a call telling me that I’m going to get a call from Kenny about it because there were some things that he wanted to tweak, lyrically, to make it more his. So, I had a couple phone conversations with Kenny and then a couple phone conversations with Brad and Andrew to where we kinda whittled it down to somethin’ that he felt like he wanted to sing, which is amazing, ’cause I think a lot of artists would just be like, ‘It’s not quite what I want; I’m gonna pass.’ And he said, ‘It’s not quite what I want; I want to fix it so that it is.’ And he did, and I’m really glad.”

audio  Old Dominion’s Brad Tursi and Matthew Ramsey laugh over Matthew’s ironic comment when “Save It for a Rainy Day” was first written. (:14)
Brad: “I make a lot of demos like at home myself of the songs we write and stuff. So, Matt said, ‘You gonna demo that song?’ I was like, ‘Yeah.’ (laughs) I just…I hadn’t thought about it. And he was like, ‘Well, do you want a Kenny Chesney cut or not?'”
Matthew: (laughs) “Yeah, I actually said that to him!”
Brad: “So, I was like, ‘All right.'”
