- Living Southern: Check out the write-up on Jake on the Southern Living website, which includes a fun, behind-the-scenes video clip from Jake’s photo shoot for his upcoming album. In the clip, Jake talks about putting peanuts in his Coke, a longtime tradition which some of you may remember being sung about in a 1981 number-one smash by Barbara Mandrell. That song, of course, was “I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool.”
Jake Owen says that a conversation about the direction of his next album became the inspiration for its first single, “Real Life.”

“I didn’t write the song, but I think Ross and Shane that wrote it will tell you that I was a big part of the reason why. We sat together in a room one night and were talkin’ about the kinds of things that I want to say on this record, and I said, ‘You know, I’m just…I’m in this point in my life where I’ve done a lot of really cool things, I’ve said a lot of things in my music.’ I said, ‘I want to make an album full of songs about life.'”
Jake Owen (:19)
“I said, ‘I want it to be real. I want to sing songs about love and happiness and family, and I want to sing songs where people can reflect in all ages about their life in general and where they are in life and what they…how they can be better to people throughout life.’ And so, that’s kind of how the ‘Real Life’ song came around.”
