Old Dominion’s Matthew Ramsey recalls the origin of the band’s debut single, “Break up with Him.” (:37)
“It actually started at a sound check one day, we were just kind of noodlin’ around like you do, makin’ noise, and fell into this groove, and Trevor recorded it on his phone, and later that night, we were travelin’ down the road in our van, and it was the middle of the night, probably 2 or 3 in the mornin’, and I just had the idea for this song to be like a one-sided phone conversation. And I sat up and went to the back where Trevor was on his guitar, and everybody was asleep, and I just whispered into my phone. I whispered the first line, so I just said, ‘Hey, girl, what’s up?’ and whispered it really quietly, and that sort of set the tone for this kind of sneaky, one-sided phone conversation.”
