Kelly Clarkson talks about working with producer Dann Huff on her collaboration with Vince Gill on the song “Don’t Rush,” nominated as CMA Musical Event of the Year. (:25)
“I was fortunate enough to get to work with Dann Huff on it again. I love him — he is so awesome to work with, and I begged him to ask Vince Gill (laughs) to sing with me ’cause I was like, ‘This sounds like such a Vince Gill song!’ ’cause it’s such, like, a R&B / country song, like it’s very soulful. I don’t know — I was excited to hear him on it, and I just think he sounds so amazing on it, and he’s just known for being, like, the best male vocalist ever, so I was pretty stoked that he said, ‘Yes.’”
Miranda Lambert recalls how she came to record “Mama’s Broken Heart,” CMA-nominated for Single, Song, and Music Video of the Year. (:45)
“‘Mama’s Broken Heart’ is a song that I kind of had to ask for. Kacey Musgraves is a girl I grew up with back in Texas, and we used to write together a lot and kind of went our separate ways. She was on Nashville Star a couple years ago. And I was accidentally pitched the song. I don’t think I was supposed to be pitched the song, but her sister actually shot some pictures at mine and Blake [Shelton]’s wedding, and she was there, too. And at our rehearsal dinner, I went over and asked her, I was like, ‘Are you gonna cut this song, or can I have it?’ And she was like, ‘I’ll think about it for a couple of days.’ And she e-mailed me, and said, ‘You can have it, if I can sing harmony.’ So that’s her singin’ the harmonies on it — and actually, Kacey Musgraves, she’s doin’ great on her own now, but I had to actually beg for this song, and so I’m thankful that she gave it to me.”
Carrie Underwood describes her video for “Blown Away,” CMA-nominated as Music Video of the Year. (1:03)
“The ‘Blown Away’ video is kind of — my take — it’s like Wizard of Oz meets the song. (laughs) It’s not all sweet and bubbles and, you know, beautiful munchkin — nothing like that. It’s the story — it’s like, rundown house — it’s like, this farm, but there’s definite ties to Wizard of Oz, ’cause I love that movie. I loved that movie growin’ up. And it’s just…what’s the first movie you would think of when you think of tornado would be Wizard of Oz. So there’s certain little tie-ins with it. I’m wearing red shoes, but they’re not like sparkly red shoes, they’re like red boots. You know, we’re shooting the thing in that like sepia, brown and white color. At the end of the video, it’s this beautiful vivid gorgeous color. Just little things. You’ll kind of have to watch it, probably a few times, to like pick out all the little references. Nothing overdone. You know, we’re not forcing anything but it’s definitely like a modern take on a classic movie.”
Carrie Underwood says that the fan response to her CMA-nominated Album of the Year, Blown Away, makes her feel really good about all the work that went into the album. (:35)
“The music industry is quite unpredictable, and you never…you just never really know what people are gonna like. And you know, you do spend a lot of time working. We worked really hard on this album — took more time, I wrote more, I was really involved in the whole, you know, production side of things, and it’s just…it’s so nice, you know, to have people enjoy it, to have people go out and buy it, to have that…all the number-ones and all the accolades and things like that because it just…all that time wasn’t wasted. (laughs) All that time was really well spent, and it makes me feel good.”
