Old Dominion – “I Should Have Married You” (STORY AUDIO)
“I Should Have Married You. This is one that this time around when we cut songs in the studio, we brought in a lot of songs we had previously written. But much like Time, Tequila, and Therapy album, where we wrote everything in the studio. This one came about in the studio. We had a day where we decided not to try to track an existing song, but we tried to write one in the studio. So Matthew had a little loop, just kind of a piano loop on his phone. And it was inspiring. We jumped off right from there and, and started to write the song and then within a few hours had something that sounded really fun. And so we just kind of went in the booth and started you know, bringing it to life and it came out, you know, very just a fun uptempo sad song, which is kind of our wheelhouse, I guess.”

Memory Lane, that song started… who wrote that? Me, you, you and Jesse Joe Dylan. We’re all at my house I have that little kind of loop going like basically the intro that you hear in the song, I kind of had that vibe going and everyone seemed to kind of gravitate towards that and I think Jesse Joe had the title Memory Lane and I think you sang if I could buy house on memory lane and we were like, Ah, I hear the melody like that’s really cool. And then we just kind of followed it from the beginning, which a lot of times doesn’t happen that way. I think it just came out really unique. It’s kind of got a really cool way that it falls into the out of the chorus and stuff.”

Old Dominion – “Some Horses” (STORY AUDIO)
Some Horses is actually interesting for us. It’s the first song we’ve ever recorded that none of us actually wrote. It was written by Shane McAnally and Matt Jenkins. It’s been around forever. And so we all kind of came up as writers together. And Matt Jenkins would always play the song at rounds, and we’ve loved it for so many years. And to date, nobody had ever recorded it and we were talking about it one time. It just came up and the way they wrote it, they wrote it from the standpoint it’s a third person, she races, she runs, and she chases the sun. But Matt, you had the idea to to flip it and say what if it was about I race and I run, you know, some horses can never be tamed. And that just seemed like, so interesting of an angle for us. And so we decided to just just tackle it and the way it came to life in the studio is just really cool. And it sounds different for us. It sounds country but it sounds modern. It sounds theatrical, and it just paints a really cool picture. And I’m just glad that song has finally gotten the chance to have a life.”

Old Dominion – “Ain’t Got A Worry” (STORY AUDIO)
Ain’ t Gotta Worry in the world is one that we wrote on the road with Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne. And we wrote this song in the same trip, they were out with us when we wrote like One Man Band and a couple others, and had been around for a while. So when we came time to make this album, you know, it’s interesting, sometimes you go back on some of your older songs, or ones that you hadn’t cut already and, and see what you have. And it’s just the timing is right, for whatever reason, we didn’t record it on the last project, but it felt right for this one and, and when we brought it to life, it just had a really just fun groove to it and a good vibe to it. So it really jumped off the page. And it’s just a fun one to listen to. And it’s got a lot of, you know, sometimes I think of that song like, oh, we just wrote this kind of fun, happy song, but there’s a lot of clever cool lines that catch me that they’re sort of hidden in this little fun track. So it’s cool to bring song to life like that and rediscover some of the lines about it later on.”

Easier Said With Rum, that was also written at my house, Matt Jenkins, Chase McGill and us two. Yeah, you know, that song we had, we finished the song and it was kind of like a little groovy beachy vibe. And then at the very end, I don’t know what happened. Chase was playing the piano or something and we kind of just did like a more mellow vibe and I just really kind of put the song in the right place. And I think it’s a great song. And when we recorded it, it was one of the probably the most special moments that we’ve ever had as a band recording music it was just, you know, everything in the world was set up perfectly to record that song when we did down in Key West.”
Old Dominion – “How Good Is That” (STORY VIDEO)
Old Dominion – “How Good Is That” (STORY AUDIO)
How Good Is That is a song that we wrote it was, Brad, Trevor, myself, Ross Copperman, Josh Osborne. And I beleive it was your idea. I think it was your title. I was thinking I was looking at it. I was thinking: I think this is my idea but I didn’t want to say it. Yeah, I think it was, you know, just one of the titles that you have done written in your phone and everybody seemed to like it. And where we went, Yeah, right? Yeah. And it was almost the last song that we recorded on that particular session. I remember we kept pushing it back and I remember once we finally got to it we were like, why did we almost not record this song? Yeah, glad it made it.”
Old Dominion – “Freedom Like You” (STORY VIDEO)
Old Dominion – “Freedom Like You” (STORY AUDIO)
“Freedom Like You is a song that we wrote with Jordan Davis actually over Brad’s house. That’s right. Smokin’ a couple cigars. Out on the patio. Yeah, just another great day at the office. Yeah. I don’t remember how that song came about. Is that your title? I think it was my title. Sometimes it all, you write so much, just kind of all blends together. But I do remember sitting out that on your porch there, and, you know, we were currently, I think on tour with Kenny (Chesney). And sometimes when you’re on tour with an artist like Kenny, you see things in a different, from a different perspective. And you know, we’re playing giant stadiums and we’re watching his show, and it’s this big kind of like rock moment and it makes us want to have those kind of moments. So that was the goal that day was to create some sort of like big, anthemic rock song and I think you know, when you’re writing with another artist, you never really know who you’re writing it for. Like he probably was like, Are we writing for me? Are we writing for you? And I think it was pretty clear when we were done with that, that we were not going to give it to Jordan. It was ours. It was three against one. Yeah, he’s a big guy, but…
