I think the actual songwriting process of this song very much felt a little out of body. It’s kind of like this is like this zooming out process where I’m just sort of floating above how I’m feeling about something. And it allows me to be able to see clearer what I’m feeling. And so I remember kind of being in that floating state, while we’re writing this song being like, wow, this really makes a lot of sense, because I think this time in history for all of us, I know, for me, personally, was spent, you know, getting to know the villain in my head very well. And being alone in those thoughts and those doubts about myself about all of the long list of things that I do want to change. You know, I think thinking about that, in the middle of this songwriting process was really terrifying and healing for me. I think my favorite place to write songs from is that sort of observing perspective. But to be kind of in this new season of observing, you know, on a more personal level, and understanding myself further has been really awesome and really hard. And I think this song is both of those things to me. There’s a lyric in the second verse that talks about how you’ll only see me laughing, sunshine and a smiling face. Sometimes I wear it like a mask, it’s easier that way. And I feel like that is the most sort of honest line of the song and of the discovery process for myself in thinking about the way that I really do kind of hide those things that are hard for me behind a smiling face. That part feels really real to me. And I think that the songwriting sort of zooming out process of that helped me make sense of that for maybe the first time clearly in my life, and that feels pretty good.
