 01 – KB – Baby Come Back To Me – CutXCut

So, recording ‘Baby Come Back to Me’ in the studio compared to the demo… it just brought it to life. Um, and it was fun because Dan had a solo on it, and it was the first time I ever really went into Dan and was like, “this solo could be better.” And I was talking to Dan Huff, so it was like…nerve wrecking. But, he loved it so much that I said that. He went and had a glass of wine and in 30 minutes sent me like 8 more solos. And was like, “After dinner I’m gonna send you some more.” And he sent like 5 more. Um, and all the solos were killer, so I just got to pick. And we just went off each solo and added them all together. We were tryin’ to come up with a rocking song that some guys would like, and get the guy fan base goin’. So I knew it was going to be kinda swampy, um, in the ‘Oh Brother Where Art Thou’ kind of way. But we had to come up with something and it just like ‘Baby Come Back to Me’ just hit us on the top of the head. And uh, we just wrote about things, about a girl leaving us… and it’s like “please come back.” And uh, we decided it was going to be our opening track for, um, not only the CD, but for the tour. And we even thought about ending with it, but we ain’t goin’ to.

 02 – KB – Good As You – CutXCut

‘Good As You’ we were having a problem writing. Um, not ‘Good As You’ in particular. We just didn’t know what to write that day. And then, uh, Shy Carter broke out his little ukulele and started playing. Um, then Will Weatherly put some drums to it and we just got like this good feel. Then all of a sudden Taylor Phillips was like, “what about like…girl I wanna be just as good as you?” And we were like oh, we like that. It sounds good. So we just ran with it. Then the song we wrote in like, 45 minutes. Um, it just felt that good. It’s one of my favorite songs off the record.

 03 – KB – Lose It – CutXCut

‘Lose It’ was the very first song that I wrote right after the album. Um, probably a year ago now. And uh, it was fun because we really didn’t know what we wanted to write. I didn’t really know how I wanted the sound to be for this new album. I just knew I wanted it really different. We started writing a song and I remember saying, ‘I’m not feeling this, like, I want to write something I’m going to be able to use for my album.’ Um, so we started working on ‘Lose It.’ And uh, Chase McGill just automatically came up with these lines and uh we ran with it. I ended up just falling in love with the melodies and the beat of the song. And just the way it switched up. There was like three different switch ups in the song. Um, like verse and chorus. I was just like, this is cool. It’s different. It’s groovy. It’s fast paced. Uh, I fell in love with it.

 04 – KB – It Aint You Its Me – CutXCut

‘It Ain’t You It’s Me’ was just a bunch of dudes in a room telling heartbreak stories. And, trying basically to just write a movie. I felt like we were really trying to write a movie, just ‘cause it was like… we were all just like, what- what do guys do whenever girls break-up with you? Cause it’s always the guys don’t care for the couple, you know, couple weeks whenever they get broken up with. Then it’s the girls that care, and then afterwards it’s the dudes that care and the girls are like off doin’ their thing. Um, but this situation was kind of different. We had to incorporate that we don’t want the break-up. It’s like… it ain’t you, it’s me that’s going through all these problems. When usually it’s in reverse. It’s super rocking and I like how Dan really put a bunch of interesting instruments in it and made it like super heartfelt rock. It’s kinda cool.

 05 – KB – Short Skirt Weather – CutXCut

Uh yeah, so Chase McGill actually came up to me- Um, I actually ended up showing up to the writing session late. I was at a writer’s retreat. And, they already had instrumentation going and he was like, ‘Kane what do you think about this title called ‘Short Skirt Weather?’ He was like I wanted to kind of make it sound older. Blah, blah, blah. And I was like, ‘I don’t know if I want to write a song called ‘Short Skirt Weather’ bro.’ And he was like, ‘just trust me.’ So, we got through like the first-first couple sentences of the verse and I was like ‘okay.’ It sounded good. I wasn’t singing on the demo, so we still didn’t know how we’d take it. But we finished it and we took it into the studio with Dan. And, I was like, ‘Dan, on this one I want it to sound super old school, 90’s country… like, kinda like ‘I Like It, I Love It.’” That was the main thing I was referring to because it was the first song I ever knew and it reminded me of it a little bit. He was like, ‘I actually worked on that record!’ So I was like, okay you know exactly what I’m talking about. And, he just went in and absolutely slayed it. That’s one of my favorite songs on the record and possibly could be one of the biggest songs on the record, um, but we were just excited because to me it’s like old school and new school country combined. And, that’s what I’ve been trying to do for the longest, I just didn’t know how to do it. And, uh, I think we nailed it. 

 06 – KB – Homesick – CutXCut

‘Homesick’ was just kind of personal just because we’ve done so many shows in the last couple of years. Um, and I’m never home. I miss my dogs. I miss my family, my friends. And, uh, I had it tattooed on me already so it kinda made sense. And, we just started writing and it was so real and so personal. Like, dancing in the kitchen you’re singing my favorite song. Like me and my fiancé, we do that all the time. And it’s like, I miss that. And then after we wrote it, I listened to it on my way home from the bus. It was like 6AM. I fell asleep listening to it and I woke up, and I just had this vision. I was like ‘I feel like the military could really relate to this song because they’re never home.’ And you know, you see all of these videos of people coming back. And you know, their dogs are excited when their soldier comes home, and all that stuff. So I was like, this is perfect, you know. 

 07 – KB – Weekend – CutXCut

‘Weekend’ was a song that literally– I was at the writer’s retreat again.  Uh, And I came in and they already had the instruments goin’, like a demo beat. And, I walked in and it was crazy because I was like, “this is what I hear.” I literally just walked in and I was like, “this is what I hear for the song. And I was like we’re just chillin’ on the weekend.” And, uh, we literally just wrote it. And I remember Kent Earls, he came over to me and was like ‘that was when Chase like saw a big jump in your writing. And, was like ‘cause you just came in and was like this is what you hear. This is what I want to write.’ And uh, he was like it’s good. So, it’s basically it’s just you’re hanging out on the weekend, with all your friends. No care in the world. In my case, it’s with my girl again. And, just having a good time. 

 08 – KB – Work – CutXCut

So, ‘Work’ is just basically me and my fiancé talking to each other and having a conversation. Literally everything in the song, me and her said the day before I wrote the song. And that’s really– I feel like I should give her writer’s credit because she basically wrote all the lyrics for it. And I basically just told Josh and Sam, the people I was writing it with, I told them what she told me. And, they agreed with it. So we turned it into a song called ‘Work.’ It’s basically therapy in a song.  

 09 – KB – One Night Only – CutXCut

‘One Night Only’ was different because we had me, Corey, Josh, Matt McGinn, and me. And, we were writing it, and it sounded like…just a super pop song basically. And I was like, ‘But you know what’s cool with this? We can write this and then I can go with Dan. And, Dan can put all of these crazy instruments on it and make it sound a lot different.’ So we did that. Then I ended up putting it on Facebook and Instagram before any of the other songs. That’s my most asked about song right now. Everyone’s like we’re waiting on ‘One Night Only.’ And it’s interesting to me because it’s like people are like ‘Oh like I want country music blah blah blah blah blah.’ And it’s like, ‘One Night Only’ is the least country song on my album, but it’s my most asked about song. So it’s an interesting song I guess.

 10 – KB – My Where I Come From – CutXCut

‘My Where I Come From’ is a song, just like an autobiography from the first album. Just talking about where I came from. It’s got all my traits, all my personalities. Then basically saying…yes, this is how I’m gonna come off to you when I meet you. There’s a lot of good and there’s also a little bit of flaws, but I learn from it. And that’s just where I came from. I’m gonna use ‘My Where I Come From’ to talk to you.  That’s one of those songs where I let Dan do his thing on. Because I had already been in there for all the rest of the records, and I forgot… I was doing something that day. But, he knocked it out of the park.

 11 – KB – American Bad Dream – CutXCut

‘American Bad Dream’ we wanted like at least one super real song that wasn’t about a relationship or anything. There’s so much going on right now that I didn’t feel a lot of artists was singing about it. So, it was very nerve wrecking for us because we were like we don’t wanna come off wrong. We need to have a strong turn around so when people listen to it, they actually understand it. The first couple of sentences really get your ear, ‘cause you’re like…what is this dude about to say?’ But then in the chorus it’s like ‘just wake me up from this American bad dream.’ Like what is going on? Because before… I don’t know if I just have a horrible memory, but before there was not all this stuff going on. Or it wasn’t broadcasted as much. So, not a lot of people heard it. But now it’s like you see it every day. You’re hearing something new that’s going on in the world. Instead of getting on, you know, one side over here or one side over there it’s kind of like we just want to meet in the middle and make everybody realize that we just need to wake the hell up.

 12 – KB – Live Forever – CutXCut

‘Live Forever’ is the only- only song on the album that I didn’t write. But I fell in love with it right when I heard it just because it was such a pretty ballad. And, it really reminded me of my fiancé. And, just kind of like my ‘Heaven’ song. It really got me on the same track as that song. And, I knew that me and Dan, together, would be able to just knock that song out of the park. It’s honestly one of my favorite songs to just cruise to. If I’m listening to like ‘American Bad Dream’ or like ‘Baby Come Back To Me’ makes me wanna drive fast. But if I want to put ‘Live Forever’ on, then it’s like I’m a 40 in a 60. Just cruising. So, I don’t know. I just like it.

 13 – KB – Lost In The Middle Of No Where – CutXCut

‘Lost in the Middle of Nowhere’ is an old song that I wrote two years ago, with Jessie Frasier and Lauren Alaina. And they came up with an awesome idea to like try to break me into Latin. So, we got Becky G coming over singing on it. She sounds great. I feel like she gave the song a lot. Especially with Dan. He really made it seem like that Latin kind of song. So, it will be interesting to see what it does. And it’s basically just a song talking about how we are just gonna keep driving and get lost in the middle of nowhere. Not know where we are at. Not use our phones. Not have phone signal, radio signal and just be by ourselves you know just keep going on the road, until it turns to gravel kind of like if the world just fell off. We just stay right there, at the end of the world.
