Tenille Townes shares about the inspiration behind her single, Somebody’s Daughter (Audio) Tenille Towns talks about the experience that led her to write her single “Somebody’s Daughter.”

Somebody’s Daughter was inspired by a drive that I took with my mom.  We were going furniture shopping and took this exit of the interstate and saw this girl holding onto a cardboard sign and she looked so young and so worried. And, we had this conversation in the car about, you know what her might of story look like.  And, I couldn’t shake her face from my mind and brought this idea into a writing room and, and I’m really just grateful for the opportunity to have grown up in a house where we had conversations about what was going on in the world around us, and the people’s lives around us, and that my parents taught me to remember the fact that everybody has a story.  You know.  And, I think sometimes music and recognizing those moments can make us feel more alike and more all together then we might realize.”

Nashville, Tenn.  – Columbia Nashville’s emerging singer-songwriter Tenille Townes releases “Somebody’s Daughter”, the lead single from the Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada native’s forthcoming debut album produced by Jay Joyce (Patty Griffin, Emmylou Harris, Eric Church); available today. Listen Here!

Originally introduced to fans acoustically on Townes’ 4-track Living Room Worktapes earlier this year, “Somebody’s Daughter” received early critical praise from NPR calling the track a “humanizing, empathetic portrait of suffering” and has quickly become a flagship song in Townes’ live set on the road with Miranda Lambert and Little Big Town this summer as fans have responded passionately to the humanity and empathy of the song’s poignant message.  Responding to Townes’ undeniable “emotional and visceral songwriting” ( CMT), fan messages and stories about “Somebody’s Daughter” have poured in to the 24-year-old from fans lining up for hours after her set every night to daily social media messages which compelled her to release the track as the first introduction to her debut album.

“Releasing “Somebody’s Daughter” as the first single from my debut album is such a proud and happy moment. Being out here on the road this season and playing the song for people every night has shown me how healing music is, and truly how powerful people’s stories are,” shares Townes. “This song is about recognizing the people around us and noticing that we are all more connected that we might realize. We were all once just a kid at a lemonade stand, or a teenager dancing in a high school gym. We all belong to somebody. We’ve all got a story.”

Co-written by Townes, Luke Laird and Barry Dean, the inspiration for “Somebody’s Daughter” was sparked by a young girl Townes noticed on a drive with her mom while furniture shopping in Nashville, Tenn. Seeing her standing at the intersection, holding a cardboard sign, moved Townes to ponder the path of life that led her to that roadside and ask the questions – “What part of her story look a left turn and led her here? How do I get to be driving with my mom looking at furniture, while she is walking this street looking for spare change?” Townes carried the memory of the young girl with her for months and later while in a writing session with Laird and Dean, the three connected over the humanity heartbreak of the story and crafted it into the song.

Labeled a leading one to watch by NPR, Rolling Stone, CMT and more, Townes has quickly emerged as one of Nashville’s most promising new artists. The 24-year old Canadian native began her music journey at 5 when she began singing and first picked up the songwriting pen at age 14. As a teenager, Townes traveled to Nashville, Tenn. for songwriting trips and continued to grow in her artistry – with candor and empathy in her writing. At 18, Townes desired to connect her music with her heart for humanity and launched her own charitable music tour, Play It Forward , where she logged 35,000 miles leading leadership and music workshops for students throughout Canada. Soon after, Townes drove her Toyota Tacoma the 45-hour journey from Canada to Nashville in 2013 to pursue her music career and quickly immersed herself in the heart of the city’s songwriting community. She has since emerged as a dynamic and genre-defying artist for her timeless, lyrical wisdom and bluesy, soulful voice; signing to Sony Music Nashville and Big Yellow Dog Music.
