CHRIS YOUNG: I’m Happy I’m Going To Be A Member Of The Grand Ole Opry

Chris Young is the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry as he was asked to join this week during his performance Tuesday night. It was a totally surprise for Chris even with tons of family members being at the show, because they all live in the area near where Chris grew up just south of Nashville. While, things added up for him later after the surprise was sprung, Chris says the big hints were well hid, “I did not see my grandad, which would’ve been the one thing that tipped me off that something was up…that would have tipped me off.  I did not see him or my grandmother, and they hid them very well. So, no. Not until the end when I started going ‘OK, this was odd, this was odd’ but it was little things. It was like ‘OK, well you’re here, but you know, we’re in town and that makes sense.’ My sister was here which also should have tipped me off, because she doesn’t come to shows a lot, but that’s easy to say in retrospect. I’m just glad they were all here, and I’m happy I’m going to be a member of the Grand Ole Opry.” The invite was extended by Vince Gill, a musical hero of Chris’, and for him, it was the perfect person to ask him to be a member of the Opry, “I mean it means the world that Vince asked me, and that he wanted to! You know, that he wanted to be a part of that. I’m obviously unabashedly a Vince Gill fan, look at my last single!” Of course, being caught up in the moment, Chris knows there’s some parts of that invitation sequence that he might not live down–but he’s OK with that, “Just being able to have that image of me awkwardly picking him up with his legs wrapped around me…as goofy of a moment as that was, it means the world to me. I haven’t even seen the photo yet, everybody was talking about that they got one, and I was like ‘Oh great. Glad that’s on the internet already.’ But it means the world that he asked me.” Then after having one the happiest moments of his life, he had to finish out his set by singing one of the saddest songs of his career with “Sober Saturday Night,” “It’s probably the happiest I’ve ever sung a sad song in my entire life. So there’s that. But, being able to know that I’ve been asked to be a member of the Grand Ole Opry and perform that song I thought that kind of wrapped it up pretty nicely.” To see Chris Young get his invite to be a member of the Grand Ole Opry, just click HERE
